    • A microwave frequency detection receiver utilizing a prescaler comprised of one or a plurality of cascaded analog frequency dividers for down-converting received microwave signals to a predetermined compressed radio frequency bandwidth, connected to a combined frequency discriminator and quantizer processor. The frequency discriminator can be either a single or multiple delay line discriminator or a two-stage feed forward digital instantaneous frequency measurement device. The receiver is characterized by wide radio frequency input bandwidth as well as accurate frequency measurement capability on short single pulse signals. Delay line discriminators can operate with high data rates and in a dense signal environment with a high probability of accurate signal frequency detection and measurement, and are thus suitable for use in electronic warfare systems.

    • A method and apparatus for performing simultaneous instantaneous signal frequency measurement using a signal sorter in conjunction with a frequency measurement receiver. Simultaneous signals of similar amplitude are received and successively applied to a plurality of either frequency or time dependent signal modifying circuits, via switching circuitry. Respective ones of the received signals are separated with respect to frequency in one or both of amplitude and time from one another via the signal modifying circuits which can be, for instance low pass and high pass filters, or positive and negative dispersive delay lines. In addition, the received signals are applied to a straight-through signal path for transmitting the signals to the frequency measurement receiver unaltered. Signals output from the signal modifying circuits and the straight-through signal path are successively applied to the frequency measurement receiver for detecting the frequency of respective ones of the separated received signals.

    • A cable for use as a distributed antenna in intrusion detection systems comprises an internal open transmission line in parallel with a periodically loaded structure which supports an external transmission line mode of operation, specifically a surface wave, and is "driven" by the open transmission line. The periodically loaded structure may comprise transmission line segments for example cylindrical conductor elements intercoupled by serial inductive coupling. There are no fewer than three and no more than fifteen conductor elements in one wavelength (.lambda..sub.S) of the external transmission line modes. Preferably the length of each transmission line segment is about one quarter of the wavelength (.lambda..sub.S) of the external transmission line modes. The inductive coupling may be provided by resistance wires extending alongside the conductor elements. The open transmission line may comprise a two-wire line and the transmission line segments two arrays of conductor elements, associated with respective ones of the two wire. Alternatively, the open transmission line may be an open coaxial cable and the transmission line segments a series of cylinders surrounding the coaxial cable.

    • Apparatus for monitoring opening of sealed enclosures, especially, but not exclusively, sealed containers containing goods-in-transit, such as goods vehicles, maritime containers or transport containers of the kind carried by tractor-trailers, ships, trains or aeroplanes comprises a radio receiver unit having at least one antenna for reception of radio signals. The receiver unit is housed within the enclosure and operates to scan a predetermined band of radio frequencies, periodically or continuously, and detect a sudden change in signal level. When it detects such a change in radio signal level, the receiver generates an alarm signal. Alternatively, the receiver may detect the difference between internal and external radio signal levels and determine the container to have been opened if the difference is less than a preset threshold. The receiver unit may be arranged to capture the FM frequency spectrum pertaining when the opening occurred and store it for later comparison with known FM frequency spectra of various cities to identify the location of the enclosure when opening occurred.

    • In an intrusion detection system comprising an open transmission line (10), for example a "leaky cable", and a receiver unit (12S,12T,14S,14T,16) for processing a radio frequency signal received by the line to detect perturbations caused by an intruder (28), problems of nonlinear sensitivity due to line attenuation are resolved by combining perturbation signals (R.sub.S, R.sub.T) from both ends of the open transmission line. A processor unit (18) computes logarithmic values of the perturbation signals from the opposite ends of the line and combines them to detect presence of an intruder. The sum of the logarithmic values may be used to determine presence of the intruder and the difference between them may be used to determine the location of the intruder relative to the end of the line. The processor may also use phase information from the two perturbation signals to facilitate detection in the presence of multipath effects. Reference signals (LO,IF.sub.T, RF) and power may be transmitted between receiver units (12S,14S, 12T,14T,16) by way of the open transmission line (10) itself. The system may employ several transmissions having different frequencies, in which case the processor (18) will sum perturbation signals for all transmission frequencies for each end of the line, combine the two sums, and compare the result with a predetermined threshold T.
