    • An improved card scanner for imaging and decoding coded data on an inserted card is disclosed. The device features a barcode scanner, a magnetic strip reader, and a digital camera for recording an image of the surface of a card. By providing these three scanning options, the device is capable of extracting data from virtually any ID card. The device can also be used to compare text or photographs scanned from a card with the digital photograph or encoded data in a two dimensional barcode and to display both sets for comparison for added reliability. The device can also be used to verify the authenticity of virtually any ID card.

    • An improved document or ID card scanner for imaging documents and decoding coded indicia such as bar codes and magnetic strips is disclosed. The scanner incorporates an internal motor and automatic multi-pass scanning function to quickly and accurately capture all data on a document. During these passes the document is imaged under a number of different lighting conditions and a magnetic strip is read multiple times. The document scanner can perform scans as the document moves in forward and reverse directions; and each scan occurs at a speed optimized to the particular scanning method and direction of the current pass. During the multiple passes, the document is scanned and or read at varying speeds for reliability and for different purposes as detailed herein.

    • An adaptive and selective scanning method, particularly for identifying and authenticating identification cards, is disclosed herein. The present invention evolved from a trend of more intricate security features configured to modern ID cards motivating more sophisticated counterfeits. These intricate features would typically require higher resolution (therefore large electronic files) and increased scanning times that would be unworkable in many environments where scan time is very important, such as airport security. Essentially, the method comprises multiple timely passes where specific target data is obtained. Initial ID card passes are concentrated to magnetic strip, as well as one and two dimensional barcode information. Subsequent card passes are focused to high resolution images of a specific portion of the card thereby reducing scan time.

    • An interactive wide area computer network system and method for accessing and transmitting data using a printed page optical code. The code includes a system configuration mode identifier which configures the system to perform specified functions and allow the user certain interactive options. Based of the configuration mode and the user's selected option, the system generates and executes the necessary queries, commands, and responses to be routed upon the network. In an embodiment, a two dimensional optical code (“2DOC” or “barcode”) is printed on a magazine page advertisement containing information such as internet web addresses, product identity, advertisement identity, location, page number, magazine issue number, and geographic routing numbers. The system extracts this information using an optical code reader and combines it with user input parameters to generate network commands which access webpages, and/or transmit and receive relevant data via a users computer connected to the internet and running an internet browser. The user may select an option wherein the system performs unique tasks depending on the advertisement.

    • An improved card scanner for imaging and decoding indica such as bar codes on a side surface of an inserted card. The device is electrically powered and features a double scanning method using an electronic imaging element and processor which turns off unnecessary power when not required. This is accomplished through the use of a processor and software to determine if a complete image of the bar code on the inserted card has been captured and allowing immediate extracting of data from the bar code and immediate removal of the card. Should the image of the bar code be incomplete, a second scan is conducted of the bar code as it is removed and if complete, data is extracted and if incomplete a complete image formed from the two individual scans. The device also employs a magnetic strip data reader to extract magnetically encoded data.
