    • A method of maintaining a desired level of sub-transient reactance in a superconducting machine includes specifying a desired level of sub-transient reactance. A stator assembly is produced that includes at least one stator coil assembly having a first predefined length. A rotor assembly is produced that is configured to rotate within the stator assembly. An asynchronous field filtering shield, having a second predefined length that is less than the first predefined length, is positioned between the stator assembly and the rotor assembly. The desired level of sub-transient reactance is achieved by adjusting either the first predefined length or the second predefined length.

    • An electric coil includes bifilar pancake coils electrically connected to an adjacent pancake coil so that current flowing in adjacent turns of adjacent pancake coils flows in opposite directions at all radial region of the coil assembly. The superconducting fault current limiter is configured to provide a minimized inductance and low resistance in a normal state of operation. On the other hand, when a fault current exceeds a predetermined threshold, the resistance increases to a level sufficient for limiting the flow of fault current to a desired level until a circuit breaker connected within the electrical system opens the circuit.

    • An exciter assembly for supplying power to a superconducting load, such as a superconducting field coil, disposed within a cryogenic region of a rotating machine. The exciter assembly provides an efficient and reliable approach for transferring the electrical power energy across a rotating interface. The exciter assembly includes a transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding, and a rotatable enclosure including a wall having an intermediate core formed of a high permeability material. The intermediate core is positioned between the primary of a transformer and the secondary of the transformer. In essence, the intermediate core acts as a flux “window” or “shunt” between the primary winding and the secondary winding. One of the primary and secondary windings is generally positioned in a rotational reference frame relative to the other of the primary and secondary windings.

    • A superconducting electromagnet arrangement includes a high temperature superconducting (HTS) coil surrounding a multiple-pole iron core for levitating and propelling a MAGLEV transport vehicle along a guideway. The HTS coil operates in the DC mode at approximately liquid nitrogen temperature of 77 K to induce in the iron core magnetic forces of attraction to levitate the transport vehicle a desired distance above a set of guideway rails. A preferred embodiment includes a Bi 2223 HTS coil surrounding a C-shaped iron core. The coil is constructed from a layer of pancake coils, the windings of which are fabricated from short lengths of commercially available conductor tape. The field strength in the core and the windings of the HTS coil are respectively approximately 1.8 T and approximately 0.3 T. To ensure vehicle stability, control coils are placed around the core legs to maintain the desired air gap length. The control coils may be copper coils, or may themselves be HTS superconducting coils operating in the AC mode at 77 K (nominal). A variation of the preferred embodiment includes three HTS coils surrounding respectively the three legs of a W-shaped iron core.
