    • Computer-implemented systems and methods for facilitating user entry and review of text-based rating descriptions about products, services, and business practices associated with Internet web pages. Embodiments of the invention comprise a rating module that interfaces with a web browser to receive feedback from a user regarding a web page that is currently being displayed by the web browser. The rating module may store the user feedback on a server. When another user visits the web page at a later time, the rating module can retrieve and display information that incorporates the feedback. In other embodiments, the feedback may be in the form of a rating. A rating may be a textual declaration from a user pertaining to anything associated with a web page. For example, a user may input a declaration concerning an aspect of a web page itself, or an item, entity, or service associated with the web page. When the rating is later presented to another user, the rating module may receive additional feedback from the other user concerning the rating. The additional feedback can affect how the rating should be displayed to subsequent users who visit the web page.

In some embodiments, systems and methods provide a semantically-oriented structure for organizing and accessing content items. The semantic organization can be derived by leveraging user interactions with the content items. The systems and methods leverage the semantics of the content items and to help the user find content items that are consistent with the purpose of the user's search. In addition, the embodiments provide a novel navigation paradigm of search results and content items so that the user can more intuitively and more efficiently get information form an information space.

    • A search system analyzes a user's search requests and identifies prior semantically-similar search requests that have provided well-received results. Each search request is classified, based on the semantics of the search request, and the user's satisfaction with the effectiveness of the search request is monitored and recorded within the determined class (or set of classes). As a particular user's search session continues, the classification of the user's search request is also used to identify other searches in the determined class, and the user is provided the option of modifying or replacing the user's current request with one of these semantically similar searches. The system may also be configured to identify the most favored results provided by these semantically similar searches, and allow the user to select from among these results. The system may also provide incremental updates over time, as new results or new semantically-similar search requests are found.

    • A system includes a brokering arrangement for exchanging information between software modules including notifiers which detect triggering events having corresponding event classes and observers interested in receiving notification of the happenings of the triggering events. The system includes a broker, observers, and notifiers. The software modules are created in discrete addressable locations of a single computer's memory or the memories of multiple computers interconnected through a network. The broker maintains one or more look-up tables having the identities and memory or network locations of all notifier and observer software modules existing in the system, as well as the classes of events with which the modules are concerned. Upon creation of a new notifier or subscription to the broker by an observer module, the broker adds the newly-created module to the one or more look-up tables, which the broker then scans to match notifiers and observers having common event classes. If the broker determines that a notifier and observer share an event class, the broker instructs the notifier to send notification of the happening of the triggering event directly to the observer. The broker, then assists notifiers and observers in establishing direct callback interfaces, but is not involved in later communications between the notifiers and observers after the callback interfaces are established. As new modules are created, and as old modules are removed and/or re-created, the look-up tables are updated and the observers are notified accordingly, thereby permitting so-called “hot swapping” of software components.
