    • A lens driving device for a zoom and a multifocus lens housing of a camera, the lens driving device comprising a holding member for holding imaging lenses and having a first helicoid formed relative to the optical axis of the lenses; a rotary member having a second helicoid which is arranged to engage to the first helicoid, the rotary member being arranged to be engaged to the holding member via the two helicoids and rotatably supported relative to the optical axis to a camera housing; a guide member which is provided for either of the holding member or the camera housing and which has two guide surfaces extending in the direction of the optical axis; and supporting members provided for the residual one of the holding member and the camera housing and having at least one pair of rotary members to which the guide surfaces of the guide member are brought into contact, whereby the contact of the guide member and the supporting members prevents the rotation of the holding member and allows the holding member to rectilinearly move in the direction of the optical axis in accordance with the rotation of the rotary member. As a result, the contact between the guide member and the supporting member prevents the rotation of the holding member, allows the holding member to rectilinearly move in the direction of the optical axis of the lens in accordance with the rotation of the rotary member so that the lens group can smoothly rectilinearly move.

    • Range measuring device for a camera measures the distances to objects respectively present in a central area of the photographing field and in plural areas including those surrounding the central area, then produces an outdoor signal indicating that the photographing is conducted outdoors or an indoor signal indicating that the photographing is conducted indoors, discriminates whether the object in the central area is the main object to be focused from the measured distance of the central area, and, if the distance in the central area is included in a reference distance range, determines the photographing distance based at least on the measured distance of the central area. The reference distance range is selected to be larger when the outdoor signal is produced than the case when the indoor signal is produced.

    • A lens apparatus, such as a lens barrel for a camera, allows different optical systems to be easily removed and installed. The lens apparatus has first and second optical systems with an optical axis of the lens apparatus extending thorough the first and second optical systems. First and second lens compartments respectively retain the first and second optical systems. First and second lens frames respectively correspond to, and respectively retain, the first and second lens compartments. The first and second lens compartments are independent structures from the first and second lens frames to allow the first and second lens compartments to be removed from, and inserted into, the respectively corresponding first and second lens frames. The present invention also relates to a method of assembling the lens apparatus. The method comprises (a) fixing a drive unit, which drives at least one of the first and second optical systems, to the base member; (b) fixing the first and second lens frames to the base member; and (c) respectively fixing the first and second lens compartments, respectively retaining the first and second optical systems, into the first and second lens frames after the drive unit and the first and second lens frames are fixed to the base member.
