    • A vehicle wheel bearing apparatus which reduces the weight, size and number of parts and also prevents ingress of rain water or dusts and leakage of differential gear oil has an axle housing supported under a body of a vehicle. A hollow drive shaft is inserted into the axle housing. A wheel bearing is arranged between the drive shaft and an opening of the axle housing and is structured as a unit including a wheel hub and a double row rolling bearing. The wheel bearing includes an inner member with a wheel hub integrally formed with a wheel mounting flange on one end and an axially extending cylindrical portion. At least one inner ring is press-fit onto the cylindrical portion of the wheel hub. The inner ring is formed with at least one of the inner raceway surfaces on its outer circumferential surface. An outer member is arranged around the inner member and formed with double row outer raceway surfaces on its inner circumferential surface opposite to the inner raceway surfaces. Double row rolling elements are arranged between the inner and outer raceway surfaces of the inner member and the outer member. A cage freely rollably holds the rolling elements. Seals seal an annular space between the inner member and the outer member. A cap, having a metal core formed from steel, is press-fit into an end of a central bore of the wheel hub.

    • To provide a third generation type wheel support bearing assembly in which a stress concentration in a recess in a hub axle can be reduced, and the repeated fatigue strength can be increased. A hardened layer is provided by means of a heat treatment at least in a portion from a raceway in a surface portion of a hub axle made of a carbon steel to a flange root portion. A recess as a circumferential groove is formed along a corner portion defined between a raceway in the hardened layer and a large collar with which an end face of a roller contacts. The recess is formed by means of a lathe turning work, after formation of the hardened layer and then undergoes machining or grinding within an inner surface thereof, thereby causing a compressive residue stress to the hardened layer.

    • A transmission is provided in which gears (31 to 34) of a first gear group provided on a first auxiliary input shaft (13) to which driving force of a main input shaft (12) is transmitted via a first clutch (24) and gears (37 to 39) of a second gear group provided on a second auxiliary input shaft (14) to which the driving force of the main input shaft (12) is transmitted via an idle gear (17 to 19) and a second clutch (25) use in common gears (43 to 46) of a third gear group provided on an output shaft (16), whereby it becomes possible to cut the number of components and reduce the dimensions of the transmission.
