    • A process for producing an acid-modified polyphenylene ether comprising conducting modification reaction substantially in the absence of solvents at 300 to 350.degree. C. by using (a) 100 parts by weight of a polyphenylene ether, (b) 0.1 to 5.0 parts by weight of fumaric acid or a derivative of fumaric acid, and optionally (c) 0.1 to 5.0 parts by weight of a radical generating agent having a half-life of 1 minute at a temperature of 300.degree. C. or higher; and a polystyrenic resin composition comprising (d) 100 parts by weight of a styrenic polymer having the syndiotactic configuration or 100 parts by weight of a component composed of a styrenic polymer having the syndiotactic configuration and a rubbery elastomer and/or a polyamide, (e) 0.5 to 5.0 parts by weight of an acid-modified polyphenylene ether obtained by the above process, and optionally (f) 1 to 350 parts by weight of inorganic filler.A convenient process for producing an acid-modified polyphenylene ether which does not cause deterioration of the working environment, enables stable production, and suppresses decrease in the molecular weight has been developed. A polystyrenic resin composition which can exhibit high toughness is provided by using the obtained acid-modified polyphenylene ether.

    • There are disclosed a polystyrene composition which comprises 100 parts by weight of a syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS)(a) and 1 to 100 parts by weight of a high molecular compound comprising 5 to 95% by weight of polyphenylene ether (PPO) and/or modified PPO and 95 to 5% by weight of a rubbery elastomer (b) and optionally, 1 to 350 parts by weight of an inorganic filler (d) and also a polystyrene composition which comprises 100 parts by weight of the component (a), 0.1 to 30 parts by weight of the component (b) and 1 to 100 parts by weight of a rubbery elastomer (c) and optionally, 1 to 350 parts by weight of the component (d). The above compositions are greatly improved in impact resistance, elongation and retention of physical properties during recycling without detriment to heat resistance and modulus of elasticity.

    • Disclosed is a resin composition containing the following components (A), and (B) or optionally, (C), (D), and (E): (A) an atactic polystyrene or a mixture of an atactic polystyrene and a rubber-like elastic substance: 30 to 95 parts by weight; (B) a syndiotactic polystyrene having a melting point of not higher than 255° C.: 70 to 5 parts by weight; (C) a polyphenylene ether having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.5 deciliter/g or less as measured in chloroform at 25° C.; (D) an inorganic filler; and (E) a polymer having compatibility or affinity with components (A) and (B) and having a polar group. The styrene resin composition exhibits improved solvent resistance and remarkable impact resistance. The composition of the invention is produced by kneading the components within a resin temperature range between the melting point of component (B) and 270° C. Resin molded products are manufactured through use of the styrene resin composition by adjusting the resin temperature during molding to fall within the range from the melting point of component (B) to 270° C.

C. in the presence of 0.1 to 3 parts by weight of a radical generator which exhibits a half-life period of 1 minute at 300.degree. C. or higher. The above thermoplastic resin composition is markedly improved in its dynamical properties especially rigidity and heat resistance.
