    • An inflator (10) for use in an inflatable vehicle occupant protection system. In one aspect, the inflator (10) includes a longitudinal enclosure (22) having a substantially uniform cross-sectional area along at least a portion of the enclosure, and a gas generant composition (24) positioned along the portion of the enclosure (22). The gas generant composition (24) is distributed substantially uniformly along the portion of the enclosure (22). A plurality of gas exit apertures (40) is formed along the portion of the enclosure (22) to enable fluid communication between the enclosure (22) and an exterior of the enclosure. The apertures (40) are spaced apart a distance proportional to a desired rate of propagation of a combustion reaction of gas generant positioned between the apertures (40). In another aspect of the invention, the total number of apertures (40) along the enclosure (22) is inversely proportional to a desired rate of propagation of a combustion reaction of gas generant positioned between the apertures (40). An airbag system (100) incorporating the inflator (10) and methods of attaching the airbag system to a vehicle are also disclosed.

    • A gas generating system (24) is provided including a gas generant container (34) and an initiator (28). The initiator (28) is positioned exterior of the gas generant container (34) so as to enable fluid communication with the container (34) upon activation of the initiator (28). A gas generant composition (32) is placed within the container (34). In one embodiment, the gas generant container (34) has sufficient rigidity to maintain a predetermined shape prior to positioning of the gas generant (32) therein, and is penetrable by combustion products resulting from activation of the initiator (28). A flame retardant (33) is positioned within the housing 17 exterior of the gas generant container (34) but in reactive proximity thereto. A seatbelt device (150) and a vehicle occupant restraint system (180) incorporating a gas generating system as described herein are also disclosed.

    • An in-line seat belt pretensioner 12 is provided that includes a frame 22 containing a first guide member 24 and a second guide member 26 for tensioning of seat belt webbing 12 upon pretensioner 10 activation. As the pretensioner 10 is activated, the seat belt 12 is tensioned by activation of an actuator 36 operably coupled to the second guide 26. The second guide 26 is then routed over a vertically stationary first guide 24 that is slidably engaged within a slot 25 within the frame 22, thereby contributing to reducing the load on the occupant. A low-friction material employed in the manufacture of the guide member(s) 24, 26, contributes to a smoother and less abrupt tensioning of the seat belt 12 upon activation of the pretensioner 10.

    • An inflator (10) for use in an inflatable vehicle occupant protection system. In one aspect of the invention, the inflator (10) includes a longitudinal enclosure (22) having a substantially uniform cross-sectional area along at least a portion of the enclosure, and a gas generant composition (24) positioned along the portion of the enclosure (22). The gas generant composition (24) is distributed substantially uniformly along the portion of the enclosure (22). A plurality of gas exit apertures (40) is formed along the portion of the enclosure (22) to enable fluid communication between the enclosure (22) and an exterior of the enclosure. The apertures (40) are spaced apart a distance proportional to a desired rate of propagation of a combustion reaction of gas generant positioned between the apertures (40). In another aspect of the invention, the total number of apertures (40) along the enclosure (22) is inversely proportional to a desired rate of propagation of a combustion reaction of gas generant positioned between the apertures (40). In yet another aspect of the invention, an airbag device is disclosed which includes an inflator having an inflator housing (12) configured as a structural member of a vehicle. The inflator housing may be employed stand-alone structural member in a vehicle or used to reinforce another structural member. The housing may comprise a cavity portion having a cylindrical cross-section. The cavity portion may serve as the structural member, or extensions (150) may be coupled to the cavity portion to provide a structural member having a desired configuration.

    • An airbag inflator (10) including an elongated outer housing (12) having an interior and one or more orifices (22) formed therealong to enable fluid communication between the outer housing interior and an exterior of the outer housing (12). The outer housing orifice(s) (22) open from the outer housing interior toward a first side (F) of the inflator. An elongated inner housing (14) is positioned in the outer housing interior. The inner housing (14) has an interior and one or more orifices (20) formed therealong to enable fluid communication between the inner housing interior and an exterior of the inner housing (14). An igniter (40) is operatively coupled to the gas generant composition (16) so as to enable fluid communication between the igniter (40) and the gas generant composition (16) upon activation of the inflator (10). The slotted, "C"-shaped cross section of the gas generant (16) provides a greater exposed gas generant surface area than would be achievable without the slot (24). This enhances the ignition and burning of the gas generant composition (16) upon inflator activation.

A first propellant body 31 and a second propellant body 33 are provided in lengths substantially equivalent to the length of the housing 12 wherein the first propellant body 31 is placed in physical contact with the second propellant body 33 for all or most of their respective lengths. Once the first propellant body 31 is ignited upon a crash event, resultant uniform ignition and combustion across the length of the second propellant body 33 results in uniform gas generation and uniform inflation of an airbag 26, wherein the airbag 26 is at least substantially coextensive with and in fluid communication with the housing 12. Preferred mixtures of first propellant body 31 contain silicone, a perchlorate oxidizer, and a nitrate salt.
