    • A tool (46) and method for removing a chip carrier socket housing (2) from terminals (4) which are received in the housing (2) and which are mounted on a substrate (8). The tool (46) comprises a yoke (48) having pulling arms (66) pivoted thereto which have free ends (78) that engage the housing (2) at the corners (36) thereof. A central axial opening (62) extends through the yoke (48) and a slide (54) is slidable in the opening (62). The slide (54) has a reaction plate (50) on its end which is shaped to engage the upper free ends (26) of the terminals (4). A locking cam (82) is provided which locks the pulling arms (66) in their engaged positions with the housing (2). An actuating means (52, 54) causes the yoke (48) and the pulling arms (66) to move upwardly (relative to the substrate (8) on which the terminals (4) are mounted) with respect to the reaction plate (50). The housing (2) is thus pulled by the arms (66) upwardly and from the terminals (4).

    • A socket (20) for interconnecting an electronic module (2) to a circuit board (14) includes an insulative housing (30) having a plurality of terminals (22) applying a moment to the module (2). A U-shaped latch (100) is positioned within a pocket (40) at each end of the insulative housing (30). The U-shaped latch (100) is of metal and has two legs (102, 104) joined by a bight (106) the two legs (102, 104) being flexible as the module (2) is rotated into a slot (34) in the insulative housing (30). The U-shaped latch (100) includes a tab (120) extending around an upwardly extending projection (50) on the backwall (46) of the housing (30) to provide additional support to the latch (100). The latch (100) thus provides means for holding the module (2) securely within the housing (30) after rotation to an upright position.

    • Chip carrier sockets (2) have terminals (4) provided therein, the terminals (4) comprising leg portions (34) with first resilient arms (18) and second resilient arms (20) pivotally attached thereto. The first resilient arms (18) have contact surfaces (26) provided on free end sections (22) thereof. The contact surfaces (26) are provided to electrically engage leads (6) of the chip carrier (8). A cover (12) is provided to cooperate with the chip carrier and to act as a protective handler for the chip carrier. Retention means are positioned on the chip carrier socket (2) to cooperate with the cover (12), thereby providing the contact force required to insure that a positive electrical connection is effected between the leads (6) and the terminals (4). The resilient configuration of the retention means insures that the retention means will not fail under normal stresses associated therewith.

    • Electrical connector (2) for electrically connecting contact surfaces (74) of a daughter board (18) to contact areas (46) of a mother board (34). The connector (2) has contacts (36) positioned therein, the connector (2) having posts (38) which extend from the connector (2) and make electrical engagement with contact areas (46) of the mother board (34). The daughter board (18) is then inserted into the connector (2) under reduced or zero insertion force conditions and rotated to its operating position. As this rotation occurs, contact projections (60, 72) of the contacts (36) engage the contact surfaces (74) of the daughter board (18). The rotation is translated into a positive wiping action between the contact projections (60, 72) and the contact surfaces (74), thereby ensuring that a positive electrical connection is effected. The resilient nature of the contacts (36) ensures that this wiping action occurs under normal force conditions. The configuration and characteristics, i.e. the low spring rate of the spring portion (68), allow the contacts (36) to be used many times without taking a permanent set, thereby ensuring that a positive electrical connection is effected with each use. To prevent the daughter board (18) from warpage and bowing during use, a support member (88) is provided which cooperates with the board (18). The support member (88) not only maintains the board (18) in proper position, but also acts as a shielding member if required.
