Novel compounds of the general formula are prepared by reacting dimethyl phosphorochloridothioate with the appropriate methyl substituted hydroxypyrazine in the presence of potassium tertiary butoxide. A specific example describes the preparation of O,O-dimethyl - O - (5,6 - dimethyl - 2 - pyrazinyl)- phosphorothioate. The phosphorothioate compounds of the invention find use for controlling a variety of insects and acarids, e.g. bean aphid. The phosphorothioates may be applied in conventional formulations such as dusts, dust concentrates, granular materials, wettable powders and emulsifiable concentrates. Suitable carriers are water or other non-solvents to which suitable surfactants have been added; or solid carriers such as talc, clay, chalk, wood flour, silica, charcoal or activated carbon. The phosphorothioates may also be applied essentially undiluted or in combination with a minor amount of hydrocarbon solvent or with malathion. The phosphorothioates may be applied to the foliage of plants, incorporated in the soil, or applied to the breeding sites to control both the larvae and adult stages.
