    • Geographical, guide or search information and route information are stored in storage sections 10 and 24. In order that an arithmetic section 20 may realize a route re-searching function in preference to the traveling direction of a vehicle, a route-calculating section 22 is equipped with a re-calculation section 22c for re-calculating the route, and a route guide control system 26 is equipped with a route deviation-detecting section 26b. The re-calculating section 22 calculates either the shortest route from the point of deviation to the previous route or a new route to the destination. In case of the search of the shortest route to the previous route, the shortest route from the present location to the previous route is searched in preference to the traveling direction (with no U-turn) on the basis of the search information of the periphery of the present location, so that the route to joint to the previous one can be quickly calculated. In case of search of a new route, the whole route from the present location to the destination is searched in preference to the traveling direction on the basis of the search information between the present location and the destination, to guide the driver along a route other than the previous one.

In another navigation apparatus for a vehicle, a structure-profiled map on which a structure-representing shape and a road are drawn is displayed so as to provide road guidance, wherein a route is displayed on the structure-profiled map along a road which is displayed for guidance. The display of the route is performed such that the route is shifted from the center line of a road toward a lane on which the vehicle is traveling. The route is displayed by using a pattern having a width corresponding to the width of the road in accordance with the lane of the road to be guided.

    • A navigation system provides road guidance by displaying information relating to roads on a structure shape map, together with landmark information, in such a manner that only information around the present position is highlighted. The system retrieves road information in the direction of travel from the present position according to the vehicle speed, or road information within a predetermined angular or distance range in the direction of travel. Information relating to roads includes information indicating a one-way road, information indicating a road into which entry is prohibited, and information indicating a pedestrian crossing and a railroad crossing. These items of information are displayed by using marks, and the landmark information is displayed by using landmarks, thereby displaying information necessary for travel in a readily perceivable manner according to the travel conditions. When the vehicle enters a parking lot in the middle of the guidance for a route to a destination, the system searches for a route from the parking lot to the destination and outputs the found route by using a structure-shape map. The parking lot in this case is one within a predetermined walking distance from the destination. If the parking lot is in close proximity of the destination, further guidance is not necessary and the guidance is terminated.
