    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the crystal thin sheet material only in a simple melt-solidification process by subjecting a liquid film consisting of a melt of a heat-meltable alloy or metallic material to cooling and solidification from one end of the liquid film in an inert gas atmosphere or under vacuum, in a microgravity environment. SOLUTION: This production comprises: interposing a heat-meltable alloy or metallic material the group of which materials includes metals, alloys, semiconductors, etc., between heat-resistant substrates such as two sheets of quartz glass, or placing the alloy or metallic material on a heat-resistant substrate, to form a filmy liquid body that consists of a melt of the material and has a 0.1 to 15 mm thickness; and unidirectionally cooling this liquid film from its one end at a 10 to 300 deg.C/sec cooling rate in a microgravity environment, to initiate solidification of the liquid film and to produce the objective high quality crystal thin sheet. In this production, in order to perform the cooling, the whole surface of one of the substrates is uniformly sprayed with a cooling medium at the time of interposing the melt between two substrates and on the other hand, at the time of forming the melt on the upper surface of a substrate, the outer surface (i.e., the other surface) of the substrate is uniformly sprayed with a cooling medium.
