    • One embodiment is directed to a heterogeneous physical layer management system comprising first devices, each comprising first physical layer information acquisition technology to obtain physical layer information about cabling attached to the first devices. The system further comprises second devices, each comprising second physical layer information acquisition technology to obtain physical layer information about cabling attached to the second devices, wherein the second physical layer information acquisition technology differs from the first physical layer information acquisition technology. The system further comprises a common management application communicatively coupled to the first devices and the second devices, wherein the common management application is configured to aggregate physical layer information from the first devices and the second devices. Another embodiment is directed to providing a physical layer management application as a service hosted by a third party. Other embodiments are disclosed.

    • Identification elements (e.g., tracking elements, tracing elements, locating elements, etc.) (22A, 100) are provided on various communication components (20, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 35, 36, 40, 42, 48, 49, 60, 62, 64, 120) provided within a communication network such as a fiber optic network or a copper network. Fiber optic hubs 20 can be identified and/or managed. Data centers (110) with patch panels (120) can also be identified and/or managed. Example passive identification elements include bar codes (e.g., 2d barcodes) and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. In certain embodiments, RFID tags and the bar codes can include network information included therein. In certain embodiments, bar codes can be used to direct technicians to network links at which additional information stored elsewhere is provided. In certain embodiments, identification elements can be provided on communication components through an application downloaded to a mobile device by scanning the bar code. Such application on the mobile device can then be used to manage the network connections, change the network connections, or check the status of the network connections. Multiple mobile devices can be used and synchronized together with a central application, website or network. One example bar code useful for reading information from a network device and linking to a management application is a QR code (100).

    • The present disclosure relates to a fiber optic network including a fiber distribution hub having a cabinet, an optical splitter within the cabinet, a hub termination region within the cabinet, a signal input location and an output cable connection location. The fiber optic network also includes a fiber distribution terminal including a terminal housing, a terminal termination region and a terminal spool. The fiber optic network further includes a wall box having a wall box enclosure, a fiber optic adapter positioned at the wall box enclosure and a wall box spool. A first fiber optic cable is wrapped around the terminal spool. The first fibe optic cable interconnects the fiber distribution terminal to the output cable connection location of the fiber distribution hub. The terminal spool rotates about first axis to allow the first fiber optic cable to be dispensed from the terminal spool. A second fiber optic cable is wrapped around the wall box spool. The second fiber optic cable is optically connected to the fiber distribution terminal. The wall box spool rotates about a second axis to allow the second fiber optic cable to be dispensed from the wall box spool.
