The optical shutter includes a light source, e.g. LCD, CRT or plasma display, that emits polarized light (12) that has a first polarization state, a first polymeric substrate (100) that receives the polarized light and transmits the polarized light without substantially changing the first polarization state of the polarized light, a second polymeric substrate (107) that faces the first polymeric substrate, and an optical stack (60) that is disposed between the first and second polymeric substrates. The optical stack includes first and second electrically conductive layers (101, 102), first and second oriented chromonics alignment layer (103, 106), and an oriented liquid crystal layer (105).

摘要： Herein are disclosed methods by which a layer of oriented chromonic material may be transferred from a flexible substrate to a receiving substrate, so as to form a subassembly for use in the assembly of liquid crystal cells. The oriented chromonic material layer may function as an alignment layer for aligning liquid crystal material, and may also incorporate a pleochroic dye so as to function as a polarizing layer. An oriented chromonic material layer of relatively large area can be transferred, which enables the production of relatively large liquid crystal cells for use in, e.g., autodarkening filters such as used for eye protection in welding operations. Curved liquid crystal cells are also disclosed.

These two layers are movable relative to one another such that each of the polarizing layer portions from one layer can substantially overlap at least two of the polarizing layer portions from the other layer, with one of these other polarizing layer portions having a substantially identical polarization direction (fig.2a) and the other having an orthogonal polarization direction (fig.26). In this way, radiation wavelengths passing through the two layers can be selectively blocked and transmitted therethrough by moving the two layers relative to one another.

Compositions of the present invention comprise a matrix comprising molecules that are non-covalently crosslinked by multi-valent cations, wherein the molecules that are non-covalently crosslinked are non-polymeric, have more than one carboxy functional group, and have at least partial aromatic or heteroaromatic character. 摘要： Curable epoxy resin compositions are provided that are mixtures containing an epoxy resin and composite particles. The composite particles have a porous polymeric core, a nitrogen-based curing agent for an epoxy resin positioned within the porous polymeric core, and a coating layer around the porous polymeric core. The nitrogen-containing curing agent typically does not react with the epoxy resin until the curable composition is heated causing the release of the nitrogen-containing curing agent from the composite particle. Additionally, cured epoxy resins formed from the curable composition and method of forming cured epoxy resins are provided.
