    • The invention is directed to an illumination apparatus that includes a light guide (10) within a recessed housing (12). A light source, such as a light emitting diode (68) can be used to provide light to the light guide (10). The light is transmitted through the light guide (10) via total internal reflection (TIR), and can be emitted in a controlled manner to ensure that a desired angular distribution of light is achieved without substantially illuminating interior side walls of the recessed housing (12). In this manner, efficient lighting can be provided. In one embodiment, the invention can be implemented within a cosmetic compact that includes a mirror. The compact may incorporate aspects of the invention by implementing a light guide (10) within a ring-shaped recess of the compact to provide facial lighting to a user.

    • A method of fabricating an elongate light guide (70) includes providing a moving mold assembly (30) with at least two mold parts (32A, 34A), wherein the mold parts have an engaged portion (32A, 34A) and a non-engaged portion (33, 33A). The mold parts are moved such that the non-engaged portions (33, 33A) move in a first direction (A, B) and the engaged portions (32A, 34A) move in a second direction (C) different from the first direction to form an elongate regenerated mold cavity (37, 39) having a longitudinal axis, wherein the cavity comprises a molding surface (54) with at least one structure (52) transverse to the longitudinal axis. A thermosettable material is introduced into the cavity (37, 39) and at least partially polymerized in the cavity (37, 39) to form a light guide (70) therein. The light guide is then removed from the mold assembly.

    • Side emitting light guides are provided in connection with illumination devices, light guide systems, and tasklight illumination kits. The side emitting light guides may be provide bright directional light, or they may be provide diffuse light. The side emitting light guides may be flexible to allow for insertion into tortuous passageways. The light guides may also have a relatively small profile and/or a solid core. The light guides may also include shades that allow an operator to convert the light guides from side emitting to end emitting in order to provide brighter, more focused illumination in a particular area to perform some tasks. When completed, the user has the option of re-configuring the light guides for side emission to provide general area illumination.
