    • Sensing elements, sensor systems and methods for determining the concentration of oxygen and oxygen related analytes in a medium are provided. The sensing element comprises a solid polymeric matrix (polydimethylsiloxane or polydiphenyl siloxane) that is permeable to oxygen or related analytes and a fluorescence indicator (a phenanthroline complex) which is covalently bound to the polymeric matrix material. The indicator is a platinum group metal chelate complex based on phenanthroline and its derivatives such as diphenylphenanthroline (bathophenanthroline). In a preferred embodiment rutheniun II tris (diphenylphenanthroline) is used. The complex is covalently bound to the polymer matrix via a linker arm, which is attached to one of the phenyl groups of the diphenylphenanthroline and to the backbone of the polymer. The sensor comprises the sensing element, an excitation assembly, a detector and a processor assembly.
