    • PURPOSE: A surface defect detecting device for a steel by using infrared illumination is provided to detect minute surface defects of a steel plate and discriminate kinds of such defects by using an infrared illumination unit without any influence of environmental illumination even during a high speed conveying, thereby achieving precise examination of the steel surface. CONSTITUTION: A surface defect detecting device for a steel by using infrared illumination includes an illumination unit(20) for radiating infrared rays to a surface of a steel plate(1), a camera(30) for obtaining images of the steel plate radiated by the infrared rays from the illumination element, an image processing part(40) for processing and analyzing image signals obtained by the camera, wherein the illumination unit is mounted slantly for maintaining a projection angle of 45 deg. with relation to the steel plate and has a plurality of infrared light emitting elements(25) disposed closely with a narrow interval for radiating parallel light, and the camera has an incident angle in a diffused reflection angle range of the illumination unit.

    • PURPOSE: A method for setting optimum shearing point is provided to achieve improved yield rate and productivity by automatically calculating the optimum shearing point prior to the shearing of the hot rolled bar. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises a first step of sequentially obtaining images of a hot rolled bar(1) at a predetermined time interval, from a CCD camera(10) interposed between a roughing mill stand(2) and a crop shearing machine(4); a second step of obtaining the difference image between the two images of hot rolled bar obtained at a predetermined time interval; a third step of judging the existence of hot rolled bar from the difference image by using a predetermined threshold value(T1); and a fourth step of calculating an optimum shearing point by comparing each pixel value with predetermined threshold values(T2,T3) from the top to the bottom of the difference image.
