    • The catalyst producing the methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate from propionic acid and formaldehyde or its derivatives is prepared by solving 3.55 gram of SnCl2 into the 50 ml of methanol, then injecting this solution to 20 gram of SiO2. After this catalyst mixts. is dried at 110 deg. C for 10 hrs., the catalyst mixts. is treated by heating at 450 deg. C for 4 hrs. in the air streaming. This catalyst contains 10 wt.% of Sn that is present in the oxide form of SiO2. When this catalyst is tested in the reactor at the condition of 380 deg. C and space velocity 900/hrs., the conversion rate of propionic acid is 30.5%, the selectivity of methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate is 81.8%, and 2.4% respectively.
