    • PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for managing an unusable block in a nonvolatile memory system are provided to enable to use a potentially usable block identified as a defective block as a spare block. CONSTITUTION: An erase count block(300) includes a specific number of bits as to a physical block in the whole nonvolatile system. The erase count block includes a page including almost 512 bytes which are used in storing data like erase count. The first page(310a) is arranged to include erase count entry as to block '0' or block '169', and the second page(310b) is arranged to include erase count entry as to block '170' or block '339'. When erase count as to a physical block '1' is recorded or read, 3 or 5 bytes of the first page are accessed. The erase count block also includes a header(320) which is located between pages(310c,310d).

    • PURPOSE: A hybrid achievement for an error correction code in a nonvolatile memory system is provided to enable to switch an algorithm dynamically used in encoding data written into a block of a nonvolatile memory. CONSTITUTION: According to a method for storing data in a nonvolatile memory of a memory system, the first block where data is to be stored is identified(204). An indicator related with the first block is obtained. It is determined when the indicator indicates to encode the data using the first algorithm. When the data is determined to be encoded using the first algorithm, the data is encoded using the first algorithm. Then the data encoded using the first algorithm is written into the first block(220,228).

    • PURPOSE: A method and a system for performing block caching in a nonvolatile memory system are provided to cache contents related with a logic page of a logic block before it is recorded in a physical block corresponding to the logic block. CONSTITUTION: A system includes an application module(704), a system manager module(708), a data manager module(712), a data integrity module(716) and an interface module(720). The application interface module(704) communicates with a host, an operation system or a user directly. The application interface module communicates with the system manager module and the data manager module. When a user wants to read, record and format a flash memory, the user transmits the request to the operation system and then the request is transmitted to the application interface module. The system manager module includes a system initialization sub module, a delete count block management sub module(726) and a power management block sub module(730). The data manager module has a function of providing pages or block mapping. The interface module provides a flash memory interface, and the data integrity manager module provides a function of ECC handling.
