    • An apparatus and a method for resource allocation in a multi-hop relay BWA(Broadband Wireless Access) communication system are provided to allocate resources dynamically according to a frame structure for supporting multiple frequency bandwidths and the traffic load of each link, thereby supporting a relay service using the multiple frequency bandwidths and solving the efficiency deterioration of resources caused by the unbalance of load by each link. An i-numbered frame(300) is divided into a downlink sub frame(310) and an uplink sub frame(320) as time resources. The downlink sub frame and the uplink sub frame are divided into a first section(311,321) and a second section(313,323) by using the time resources. A TTG(Transmit/Receive Transition Gap)(331) of a time protection area exists between the downlink sub frame and the uplink sub frame. An RTG(Receive/Transmit Transition Gap)(333) of a time protection area exists between the i-numbered frame and an (i+1)-numbered frame. A BS(Base Station)(350) transmits a preamble, control information and a downlink burst successively to a terminal 1 connected by a link during the first section of the downlink sub frame. The BS transmits control information, a downlink burst, and a post amble to an RS(Relay Station)(360) successively during the second section. The control information included in the second section includes the resource allocation information of the control information about the resource allocation information of a control information area which the RS transmits to the terminal 1. The BS receives an uplink burst from the terminal 1 during the first section of the uplink sub frame. The BS receives the uplink burst from the RS during the second section. The RS transmits a preamble, control information, and a downlink burst successively to a terminal 2 connected by a relay link during the first section of the downlink sub frame. The RS receives control information, a downlink burst, and a post preamble from the BS during the second section successively. The RS receives the uplink burst from the terminal 2 during the first section of the uplink sub frame. The RS transmits the uplink burst received from the terminal 2 during the first section to the BS during the second section. An R-TTG(Relay TTG)(335) of a time protection area exists between the first section and second section of the downlink sub frame. An R-RTG(Relay RTG)(337) of a time protection area exists between the first section and second section of the uplink sub frame.

    • An opportunistic packet scheduling apparatus and method in consideration of the re-use of radio resources and QoS(Quality of Service) in a broadband wireless communication system using multi-hop relay are provided to install and operate a system effectively by increasing the number of accommodated users while guaranteeing QoS in a single BS(Base Station). A current radio resource efficiency calculating unit(300) collects channel information reported by a user terminal and a repeater by each user terminal path, initializes the size of resource allocation, and determines whether to re-use resources of each path by comparing the sizes of resource allocations of each user terminal path. A QoS parameter calculating unit(306) calculates a parameter for satisfying a current radio resource efficiency and QoS requirements of each user terminal path reflecting whether to re-use resources. A scheduling priority index calculating unit(304) calculates a scheduling priority index of each user terminal by using the current radio resource efficiency and the QoS parameter.

    • An apparatus and a method for selecting a relay mode in a broadband wireless communication system using multi-hop relay are provided to improve a production yield and an outage performance of a system by using a proper relay mode according to a terminal distribution or a channel state. A base station requests channel state information with relay stations from a terminal(501), and checks whether a signal is received from the terminal(503). The base station checks channel state information between the relay stations and the terminal included in a reception signal(505). The base station estimates an interference strength and a signal strength by using the channel state information(507). The base station estimates CINRs(Carrier to Interference and Noise Ratios) of a simple relay mode and a cooperative relay mode(509), and determines a relay mode to provide a relay service by using the CINRs(511). The base station transmits resource allocation information including the relay mode to the relay stations and the terminal(513), and transmits data to the relay stations or the terminal according to the resource allocation information(515).

The map channel(101) locates source allocation of downlink and uplink. The down/up data bursts consist of fixed assignment regions(103,109) and dynamic assignment regions(105,111). The dynamic assignment regions(105,111) are allocated to users having a fine channel condition. The fixed assignment regions(103,109) are allocated to the users having a bad channel condition or using a small size service such as VoIP(Voice over Internet Protocol). The uplink control channel(107) transmits information of a random access for ranging and source allocation, a channel information feedback, and a hybrid ARQ.

A scheduling priority index calculating unit(502) calculates a scheduling priority index at a ratio of an average radio resource efficiency of each user terminal and the efficiency of the current radio resources. A maximum priority index user selecting unit(504) selects a user terminal with the largest scheduling priority index, and performs scheduling on the selected user terminal.
