In the display device, liquid crystal molecules of the nematic liquid crystal material are aligned parallel to the surface of the pair of substrates during black display; slow axes of the first retardation region and of the second retardation region are parallel to each other; the second retardation region shows a Re(550) of 20 nm or less and Rth(550) of 20 nm to 120 nm; and the first retardation region includes a retardation layer containing an obliquely aligned discotic liquid crystal compound, and has Re(450)/Re(550) of 1 or more and 1.13 or less and Re(650)/Re(550) of 0.94 or more and 1 or less.
