摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To completely purify hydrocarbons by placing an HC adsorbent in an exhaust passage of the engine, providing a recirculating apparatus for recirculating an exhaust gas into an intake passage of the engine, and placing a NOx absorbent in the exhaust passage of the engine. SOLUTION: An exhaust port 10 is connected to an exhaust turbine 23 of an exhaust turbo charger 15. The exhaust turbine 23 is connected to a catalytic converter 26 having a catalyst 25 therein. An exhaust pipe 28 connected to the catalytic converter 26 and an air intake pipe 17 located downstream of a throttle valve 20 are connected to each other through an exhaust-gas recirculating passage 29. An HC adsorbent 53 for adsorbing unburned hydrocarbon(HC) contained in an exhaust gas is placed in an exhaust pipe 24. A NOx absorbent 25 is placed in a casing 26. Thus, HC can always be prevented from flowing out into the atmosphere, regardless of respective temperatures of the HC adsorbent and NOx absorbent.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem such as generation of misfire by executing combustion wherein a rate of inert gas supplied in a combustion chamber is much more than a rate of inert gas in which a soot generating rate peaks and the soot is hardly generated, and inhibiting combustion wherein the soot is hardly generated when a period rotating speed is not less than prescribed rotating speed. SOLUTION: In a diesel engine 1, a part of exhaust gas is returned to an intake side for recirculation through an EGR passage 29 in order to suppressing the generation of NOx, a combustion temperature falls down in a combustion chamber with increase in an EGR gas rate, and a generating rate of NOx is reduced in association with reduction of the temperature. When an EGR rate exceeds some limit, a rate of smoke is rapidly increased. The EGR gas rate is further increased after the rate of smoke exceeds a peak level a condition becomes an operating condition in which soot is hardly generated. When period rotating speed exceeds not less than prescribed rotating speed during performing a combustion operation in a low temperature, the combustion operation is inhibited. It is thus possible to solve such a failure that a combustion condition is deteriorated and misfire is generated.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the introduction of the exhaust gas including the predetermined quantity or more of hydrocarbon into the intake air through an exhaust circulating pipe by closing the exhaust circulating pipe, and thereafter, injecting the predetermined quantity or more of hydrocarbon when judged that the predetermined quantity or more of hydrocarbon should be injected to the catalyst connected to the exhaust pipe. SOLUTION: In case of supplying the fuel of HC to the NOx catalyst 12 in an internal combustion engine, quantity of fuel to be supplied to the NOx catalyst 12 is decided on the basis of the NOx discharged amount, which is estimated on the basis of the output of an intake pressure sensor 5 and a crank angle sensor 6, and the output of an upstream side temperature sensor 13 and a downstream side temperature sensor 14. In the case where the quantity of fuel to be supplied exceeds the predetermined quantity, an exhaust circulating valve 16 is closed, and thereafter, main injection is performed, and continuously auxiliary injection is performed in an expanding stroke or an exhausting stroke separately from the main injection. Introduction of the exhaust gas including the predetermined quantity or more of fuel into the intake air is thereby prevented, and while NOx included in the exhausted gas is purified by the NOx catalyst.

摘要： An internal combustion engine has an EGR passage (24) provided with an EGR control valve (25) and a catalyst (26a) for purifying the EGR gas. When the internal combustion engine operates in a low-temperature combustion mode in which the amount of EGR gas supplied to a combustion chamber (5) is larger than that of EGR gas with which the amount of soot produced reaches a peak, and almost no soot is produced, a controller (30) reduces an opening amount of the exhaust gas recirculation control valve so as to increase an exhaust gas temperature, and reduces an opening amount of the throttle valve so as to suppress an increase in the amount of the EGR gas, thereby to reduce reductions in the temperature of the EGR gas and the temperature of the catalyst.

摘要： An internal combustion engine performs a second mode of combustion where the EGR is less than the EGR gas that peaks the production of soot. The engine then performs a first mode of combustion where the EGR is greater than the EGR that peaks the production of soot. During the second mode, the engine curbs hydrocarbon supplied to an exhaust gas control catalyst by performing a combustion where hydrocarbon does not increase. The exhaust gas temperature discharged becomes relatively high and the EGR rate is set to zero. The engine then increases the hydrocarbon supplied to the catalyst by performing a combustion that increases the hydrocarbon. The temperature of exhaust gas discharged becomes relatively high, and the EGR rate is gradually increased. Accordingly, the engine quickly warms up the catalyst while preventing problems that occur, like clogging of an exhaust gas recirculation passage.

NOX absorbent 25 is disposed in an engine exhaust passage. To discharge NOX or SOX from the NOX absorbent 25, the air-fuel ratio of one cylinder is set to a rich side, and those of remaining cylinders are set to lean sides.
