    • PURPOSE: To prepare ultrafine powder of carbide with a low content of impurity, by bringing an electrically-conductive material, e.g., carbon, etc. into contact with a substance, e.g., silicon, etc. so that electricity is applied in a vacuum container having a specific introduced gas.
      CONSTITUTION: The silicon block 3 as a substance is placed on the base 2 made of a carbon material in the vacuum container 1. The electrically-conductive member 4 held by the holding part 5 made of a carbon material is brought into contact with the surface of the silicon block 3. After the silicon block 3 is preheated, electricity is applied by the electric wires 8 and 9 so that electric current is applied through the silicon block 3 and the base 2. A carbon component-containing compound, e.g., methane gas, is fed from the circular nozzle 11 through the feed pipe 14. Consequently, silicon is reacted with carbon, silicon is reacted with methane gas, and ultrifine powder of silicon carbide is attached to the inner wall of the vacuum container 1. After the reaction is over, the ultrafine powder is gathered to collect silicon carbide.

      SOLUTION: The apparatus (1) for producing monolayer carbon nanotubes is characterized as follows: in a reaction vessel (3), a pair of electrodes (13, 15) are arranged so as to face each other with an almost horizontal gap; a gas supply means (7) supplies an atmospheric gas into the reaction vessel (3) so that the atmospheric gas passes through the gap between the electrodes in one direction from below to above; above the gap between the electrodes, a collecting body (9) is installed; and a product containing monolayer carbon nanotubes composed of carbon evaporated from the anode (13) is blown off to above the gap between the electrodes by the atmospheric gas, adheres to the collecting surface (37) of the collecting body (9), and is collected in a high yield.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filament having carbon nanotubes as a main component, and to provide its manufacturing method.
      SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of a filament has a process in which a nanotube assembly made by assembling a plurality of carbon nanotubes in a network state is formed by depositing carbons from gas phase. Then, the method has a process of drawing the nanotube assembly and a process of overlapping the nanotube assembly. The drawing process can be carried out for a plurality of times by having the overlapping process in between. It is desirable that the drawing direction in these plurality of times of drawing processes is kept in a nearly identical direction.
