In a rolling mill for metal strip or sheet the working rolls 10, Fig. 1, are supported by driven intermediate rolls 8, 9 which are in turn supported by a single upper backing roller 12 and a pair of spaced lower backing rollers 16 which are so distributed along the intermediate rolls as to impart the same strain curvature #, #, Fig. 5, to the upper and lower rolls 10 so. that a uniform thickness of material is obtained across the width. The working rolls 10 are supported without journals between end blocks 26 and are held in position by two rows of supporting rollers 20, Fig. 2, engaging opposite faces of the rolls and mounted in brackets 21 attached by bolts to the housing 11. The single upper backing roller 12 is mounted between bearing boxes 13 to which pressure is applied through a pair of screw downs 19 11 , 19 111 . A second pair of screw downs 19 1 19 1111 apply pressure to the roll chocks 14 of the intermediate upper roll 9, to produce the strain curve #, Fig. 5. The lower intermediate roll is supported by the pair of backing rollers 16 running on spaced bearing boxes 17, 18 to give a strain curve #, Fig. 5, of similar shape. The drive for the intermediate rolls 8, 9 is provided by a motor 1 through a differential gear 5 and spindles 6.

    • Since the chip-breaking groove 30 is cut in the inner peripheral surface of the prepared hole 22 by compressing the chip-breaking tool 10 into the prepared hole 22 prior to the tapping process (the cutting process of the female thread) by the cut tap, the chip can be securely broken by the chip-breaking groove 30 and well discharged even in the case that the work 20 is made of the material having the high ductility. Accordingly, for example, as shown in FIG. 10, it is possible to prevent a lot of long connected chips from entwining the tap, it is unnecessary to monitor the tapping work, and it is possible to achieve a complete automation (an unmanned work). Further, it is possible to inhibit the cut tap from being broken due to the pinching of the chip, and it is easy to execute a treatment such as a chip cleaning or the like.
