    • An image forming apparatus includes a main charger and an exposure unit for forming an electrostatic latent image on a photosensitive drum, a developing unit for developing the latent image, a resupply unit for resupplying the developing unit with toner, an auto-toner sensor for detecting the concentration of the developing agent in the developing unit, a toner-empty mechanism for detecting the quantity of toner remaining in the resupply unit, and a display section for indicating the need for replenishment of the resupply unit with toner. If a shortage of toner in the resupply unit is detected by toner-empty mechanism, the display section displays a mark indicating the need to replenish the resupply unit, but does not interrupt a copying operation in progress, while if the auto-toner sensor detects that the concentration of the developing agent in the developing unit is below a predetermined value, the display section displays a message to the effect that the resupply unit should be replenished with toner, and stops the copying operation in progress.

A test mode is set when two specific numeric keys of the ten-key board are pressed at the same time. In the test mode, the ten-key board presets a 2-digit numeral previously allotted to a motor to be tested. Determination is made from the second position of the numeral as to whether the motor to be tested should be driven or stopped.

    • A copying machine including an image forming section, a control unit, and memory means. The control unit has a memory storing data for controlling the image forming section. The memory means stores maintenance data which is generated every time said image forming means is operated and which represents maintenance items to be performed on the image forming section. When the machine is set in maintenance mode, the data is read from the memory. At the same time, at least one of the components of said image forming section, which needs to be replaced by a new one, is selected in accordance with the data stored in the memory means. The selected component is locked at a desired position, thereby to facilitate the replacing of the selected component and to reduce the time and cost required for maintenance work.

    • A copying machine includes: a rotatable photoconductive drum and an optical assembly, having optical elements, for optically scanning a paper document, and forming an optical image corresponding to an optical document image on a photoconductive drum surface. The optical assembly includes: a lens; a first mirror section for introducing the image to the lens; and a second mirror section for introducing an optical image from the lens onto the drum. The position of the first mirror section relative to that of the second mirror section varies under mass production conditions although the relative positional relationship is preset in accordance with the inherent focal length of the lens. A focus adjusting device having DIP switches which are manually operated by an operator slightly moves the lens, the first mirror section and/or the second mirror section so as to eliminate positional errors in the optical assembly in accordance with the electrical data generated by the DIP switches, thereby compensating the out-of-focus state of the optical image on the drum surface.

The cleaning unit brings its cleaning blade into contact with the drum to scrape off the toner from the drum. The photoconductive drum is rotated at a speed considerably lower than the rotating speed for a copying mode after completion of a copying cycle, and is stopped after the passage of a predetermined time. When the drum is stopped, the cleaning blade is separated from the drum.
