    • The present invention relates to a biodegradable amino-carboxylic acid chelating agent which comprises a compound of the following formula (1) and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of aspartic acid, maleic acid, acrylic acid, malic acid, glycine, glycolic acid, iminodiacetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid, &agr;-alanine, &bgr;-alanine, imino-dipropionic acid, fumaric acid, a synthetic starting amino acid and a synthetic intermediate amino acid and a salt thereof in an amount of 8% by weight or less based on the compound of the formula (1): wherein R1 represents hydrogen or an unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbon group of 1-20 carbon atoms, R2 represents hydrogen or an unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbon group of 1-8 carbon atoms, R1 and R2 may form a ring together, the substituent which can be present in R1 and R2 is at least one member selected from the group consisting of —OH, —CO2M and —SO3M where M represents hydrogen or an alkali metal; X represents where R3 represents hydrogen or an unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbon group of 1-8 carbon atoms, the substituent is at least one member selected from the group consisting of —OH, —CO2M and —SO3M, R4 represents at least one member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, —CO2M and —SO3M, A1 and A2 each represent at least one member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, CO2M and SO3M, A5 represents an alkylene group of 1-8 carbon atoms which may be of straight chain or branched chain or may form a ring, the alkylene group may contain in the chain an ether bond, —O—, an ester bond —COO- or an amide bond —CONH-, M represents hydrogen or an alkali metal, and n represents an integer of 1-8; an Y represents at least one member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, CO2M and SO3M excellent in biodegradability and for use as a chelating agent, which is in the form of a solid, aqueous solution or slurry excellent in handling ability, wherein the chelating agent comprises a detergent composition having excellent detergency and high biodegradability.

    • A cyanoacetic acid higher ester represented by the general formula: NCCH.sub.2 COOR', wherein R' represents an alkyl group having 4 to 20 carbon atoms, is prepared by subjecting a cyanoacetic acid ester represented by the general formula: NCCH.sub.2 COOR.sup.1, wherein R.sup.1 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atom, to a transesterification with an alcohol represented by the general formula: R'OH, wherein R' represents an alkyl group having 4 to 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of a specific tin compound as the catalyst. According to the present invention, the cyanoacetic acid higher esters which are useful as intermediates for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals as well as intermediates for industrial products can be prepared easily and in higher yield as compared with conventional methods, by using a cyanoacetic acid ester and an alcohol which are less expensive and easily available as raw materials.
