    • A process for producing a 3-arylindoline compound represented by general formula (2), (wherein R represents optionally substituted phenyl or an aromatic heterocycle; and R represents hydrogen, halogeno, lower alkyl, hydroxy, lower alkoxy, carbamoyl or lower alkoxycarbamoyl) which is usable in the production of a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist 1-acyl-3-arylindoline compound represented by general formula (1), wherein R and R are as defined above; and R represents (a) or (b) on the basis of the facts that a 1-acyl-3-arylindole compound, obtained by binding an eliminable electron attractive group to the 1-position of a 3-arylindole compound by acylating the compound with an organic acid such as a carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, etc., easily undergoes catalytic reduction under neutral or weakly acidic conditions to thereby give a 1-acyl-3-arylindoline compound; and that an optically active 1-acyl-3-arylindole compound, obtained by acylating a 3-arylindole compound with an organic acid such as an optically active carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, etc., can give an optically active 1-acyl-3-arylindoline compound at a high selectivity by catalytic reduction.
