    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel improved bipolar lithium-ion rechargeable battery system.
      SOLUTION: The new improved bipolar lithium-ion rechargeable battery system (10) comprises a plurality of separate electrochemical cells (12a, 12b, ..., 12n) where positive and negative electrodes (14a, 14b, ..., 14n, and 16a, 16b, ..., 16n) are arranged so that they oppose and face mutually while interposing perforated separators (18a, 18b, ..., 18n) containing an electrolyte. The positive and negative electrodes in adjacent cells are arranged in contact with both the sides of common current collection elements (20a, 20b, ..., 20n) for forming a unitary bipolar structure. The negative electrode has a carbon layer (24) adhering to one side of the current collection element, and the positive electrode has a layer containing a lithium transition metal or sulfide compound (26) adhering to the other side of the element. The unitary bipolar structure including the positive and negative electrodes of the adjacent cells is joined integrally in a sealed stacked array. Preferably outer-periphery electrical insulating sealed members in plastic insulation rings (28a, 28b, ..., 28n) are included.

    • A process for controlling the hydrogen that evolves as a parasitic by-product during the operation of a metal/air fuel cell (10) which comprises feeding into a catalytic recombiner (20) a gaseous stream containing hydrogen being discharged from the metal/air cell together with an amount of oxygen (18) sufficient to convert the hydrogen to water, said oxygen gas concentration being monitored by an electronic sensor (16) and adjusted by a valve (19) to maintain a concentration in the stream entering the recombiner in the range of 1.5 to 2.5 % by volume. The process is of particular value in closed system aluminum/air fuel cells in which small amount of hydrogen must be removed, e.g., the sealed hull of an underwater vehicle.
