    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect at least an interface between a melting slag layer and a melting metal layer by accurately measuring the length of an electrode in an electric resistance type melting furnace, to prevent a failure such as an upper heat phenomenon and breakage accidents of an electrode.SOLUTION: The present invention is related to a method of measuring the length of a carbon electrode in an electric resistance type melting furnace in which the carbon electrode that is hung in the furnace is inserted in an object which is melted and deposited in the furnace, and electric power is applied between the electrodes to melt the object. An air hole extending down to a lower end along axial line is formed at least at one carbon electrode. A microwave transmitting/receiving device is attached to an upper end, otherwise, a metal pipe reaching the lower end of the electrode is inserted therein. The microwave transmitting/receiving device is attached to the upper end for transmitting microwaves. The microwaves reflected in the air hole or at the lower end of metal pipe are received to acquire the length of the electrode.
