    • A rotary cone drill bit is provided with at least one cutter cone assembly having a machined cutting structure which will maintain an effective cutting profile despite abrasion, erosion and/or wear of the associated cutting elements. The machined cutting structure may be formed on a generally cone shaped blank by a series of lathe turns and/or plunge cuts. The cutting elements may be formed with an aggressive cutting profile. For one application, the crest of each cutting element has the general configuration of an ogee curve. A layer of hardfacing material may be applied over all or selected portions of the machined cutting structure.

    • The body of a raise boring head is produced from a truncated cone. A variety of efficient and economical methods such as spin-forming, casting, rolling, etc. may be used in producing the truncated cone body. A multiplicity of rolling cutters positioned in cutter saddles are mounted on the truncated cone body. The mounting surfaces for the cutter saddles are on a continuous plane. The continuous plane can be produced on the truncated cone body in one turning operation. The raise boring head is self-cleaning due to the natural tendency of the cuttings to slide toward the periphery of the truncated cone body surface. The overall gross weight of the raise boring head is reduced and the strength-to-weight ratio is increased. The structural rigidity of the raise boring head is improved even though many of the structural components used in prior art raise boring heads have been eliminated.

    • A pressure compensating assembly for use in roller cone drilling bits of the sealed bearing type. The compensating assembly includes a hollow body arranged to fit into a cavity in the bit connected with the lubrication system of the bit and the hollow body includes a normally open lubricant passageway extending therethrough. A seal encircles the body on one side of the lubricant passageway and is arranged to sealingly engage the bit and an elastomeric, cup-shaped diaphragm is located on the body and has a lip arranged to sealingly engage the bit on the other side of the lubricant passageway. The diaphragm having a protuberance on the side of the diaphragm facing the passageway and sized to enter and close the passageway. The body, seal, and diaphragm being assembled into a unitary cartridge for introduction into the bit as a unit.

    • A cutter assembly for rotary boring of earth. The assembly comprises a rotating cutter having a shaft protruding from the ends of the cutter; and a mounting member for the rotating cutter. The mounting member comprises two legs the ends of which are provided with counter surfaces for the ends portions of the shaft. The assembly further comprises fastening elements provided with a counter surface, the fastening elements being fitted at the ends of the legs for fastening the shaft to the mounting member. In order to provide a self-adjusting and reliable assembly which prevents the turning movement of the shaft, the curvature of the middle portion of the counter surface of the fastening element is so formed that a gap narrowing in the direction of the periphery of the shaft is defined between the shaft and the middle portion of the counter surface of the fastening element. A clutching part extending in the radial direction is arranged at the end of the shaft. When the shaft turns, the clutching part is pressed against the counter surface, thus preventing the turning of the shaft in this direction.

    • A roller cone drill bit having a bit body with at least one support arm extending from the bit body. Each support arm may have an associated spindle extending inwardly. A respective cone assembly may be rotatably disposed on each spindle. At least one diverter plug may be disposed in a hole formed in each support arm. A void space may be formed between one end of each diverter plug and the bottom of the associated hole. At least one fluid flow passageway may extend from the surface of the associated support arm to the void space to allow communication of fluid containing debris with the void space. Rotating action of the roller cone drill bit and associated cone assemblies may force packing of debris into the void space which results in biasing the diverter plug outwardly from the associated hole to contact adjacent portions of the associated cone assembly.
