    • 12,672. London Small Arms Co., and Bennett, F. W. May 28. Sights.-Relates to aperture back-sights of the folding type, in which an arm carrying a socket is pivoted and locked in position at the side of the gun, the socket containing a rotating sliding pillar, at the upper end of which is pivoted a lateral arm carrying an adjustable sight. The invention consists mainly in improvements in the adjusting-means, and in the construction, whereby the folding-down of the sight is facilitated. The pillar f slides in the socket c for coarse adjustment, and is held by a spring catch l capable of being released by a push-button. Rotation of the pillar is prevented by the engagement of a stud on the socket with a slot g in the pillar. The lateral arm o, which carries the aperture sight p, is pivoted to a spindle j sliding within the pillar f ; fine adjustment is obtained by raising or lowering this spindle by means of a nut k. Lateral adjustment for windage is obtained in a similar manner by means of a nut o and a screwed spindle o . The pivot of the arm o is provided with a spring catch for holding it in either the operative or folded position. To facilitate close folding of the sight, the slot g, which prevents rotation of the pillar, has a cross extension g , which communicates with a second slot on the other side so that the pillar can, when desired, be turned through 180 degrees. When the sight is put out of use, the cross-arm o is first turned up parallel to the pillar; this pillar is then rotated through 180 degrees and the whole sight is turned down so as to lie at the side of the action. To facilitate reading the scale, the spindle j is provided with a vernier m , Fig. 3, which slides in a graduated slot m in the pillar, and is seen through a slot in the socket. A vernier o , Fig. 6, is also provided on the windgauge slide. In the construction shown, this vernier can be adjusted to its zero position by a differential screw q. Similar adjusting-means may also be provided for the other vernier.

    • 612,336. Speed governors. BARTLETT, W. B. April 20, 1946, No. 12127. [Class 57] A governor for controlling the speed of a marine engine when the ship is pitching comprises a pendulum 45 swinging on a pivot 38 and engaging a roller 46 on the bell-crank lever 42. When the ship's stern rises the frame 34A, 34F inclines with the ship carrying the pivot 55 aft, relative to the pendulum. Through links 44 the notched plate 3 is pivoted forwardly, carrying side plates 2 and 1 with it since pin 15 is engaged in the notch 50. This movement brings the weight 6 and mercury tube 11 past its top dead-centre, causing plate 2 to engage spring 18 and a switch for closing the main stop valve of the engine. Pin 15 is lifted by cam 4 and is replaced in slot 49 ready for the return movement when the ship's stern falls. The part 39 is connected to the stop valve so that as the valve opens again, spring 31 is compressed against the action of dash-pot 32, thus delaying the movement of pin 30 which is connected to again reset pin 15 in its initial position.

[Classes 66, 125 (i) and 125 (iii)] A container for perfume, vaccine or other liquid required to be delivered in small quantities, is provided with a restricted outlet orifice countersunk within the neck and a larger outlet closable by means of a screw cap, a resilient plug forming sealing means for the restricted orifice. As shown in Fig. 2, the neck 2 of a glass bottle has an inwardly projecting flange 5 in which the restricted orifice 6 is formed and which provides a seating for a resilient plug 7 having flaps 8 to assist removal. Instead of the flaps 8, the plug may have loops, a projection, knob, etc. In a modification, Fig. 4, which is applicable to containers for vaccine, the flange 5 forms a seating for a washer 12 having a nipple 13, pierceable by a hypodermic needle, located within the restricted orifice. A cylindrical plug 14 has a central bore 15 and the closure cap has a resilient lining 16 pressing against the plug. The upper end of the bore 15 may also be provided with a nipple if desired. According to the Provisional Specification, the plug may be replaced by a ground glass stopper.

    • 465,609. Circular loom-shedding mechanism. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., BENNETT, J. W., HALE, F. C., and POOL, W. Nov. 9, 1935, No. 31044. [Class 142 (ii)] The warp threads are deflected in turn from their normal line by rollers 54, 60 and the light flat metal healds 24 consequently tend also to be moved outwards (to the left in Fig. 3), but the movement of certain of these is restrained by stop members 45, adapted to be selectively interposed in their path. Sheds are thus formed which the shuttle noses can enter and expand. In a loom with a rotating shuttle, the healds rest on wire rings 22 and their forked inner ends embrace rings 22 on fixed radial plates 21 on brackets 18 on stationary columns 19, whilst the rollers 54, 60 are. carried by a rotating ring 56. Columns 48 on the rotating ring 15 carrying the vane wheel mechanism for actuating the shuttles support a ring 49 furnished with brackets 50 connected by an annular ring 51 carrying rollers 53 engaging the rollers 54, whereby the ring 56 is rotated, overrunning thereof being prevented by rollers 59. The stop members may comprise pivoted blades movable by toggle devices described having diamond-shaped members 32 operated by cams 64 inserted in slots in the brackets 50, which move around the loom, the toggle devices being carried by box-like brackets 30 on annular rings 28, 29 fixed to the stationary plates 21. The notched ends of some of the blades are thereby interposed in the path of some of the banks of healds, for example, the second, third, fifth and sixth from the top, the remaining banks of healds being free to move to the left. Rollers 62 ensure the return of the healds to normal position by inwardly deflecting the outer sheet of warp threads. The rings 22, 23 are spaced by members 27. In one modification described, an intermittentlyrotated pattern drum is provided on each face with cams for controlling the toggle-lever devices. In another, a frame 78 is slidable up and down in slots in fixed plates by means of a lever 87 carried by a support moving around the loom, and operated by plate cams 91 with inclined edges on an endless pattern chain on the loom frame. The upper horizontal plate 80 on the frame 78 can thus be placed in restraining position opposite any bank of healds. In the Provisional Specification it is stated that the invention may be applied to looms with stationary shuttles and to looms in which the shuttles and warp rotate in opposite directions. An arrangement is also described wherein the healds lie in slots between arcuate strips lying one above another and forming segments of two coaxial cylinders. A slotted plate is movable up and down by a cam to obstruct the motion of all but one or more of the banks of healds. The cam may be vertically slidable under the action of another cam which may be fixed or movable under the control of a dobby chain, jacquard cord, or selecting drum, &c. Each heald may comprise a pair of wires. Various arrangements of pivoted stops, and cams comprising fixed or movable pegs are described.
