    • 542,040. Valves. NORDAC, Ltd., SWINDIN, N., NORMAN, A. E., and BELCHER, A. W. June 22, 1940, No. 10768. [Class 135] A manually-actuated valve of the type in which a closure member or gate is moved transversely to the fluid passage and in which leakage past the actuating spindle is prevented by a corrugated diaphragm is provided with means independent of the normal closing means for temporarily holding the closure member in the closed position to facilitate replacement of the diaphragm. In the form shown in Fig. 1 a conical valve member of rubber co-operates with a seat in a casing provided with an indiarubber lining 16 and is secured to the flanged end of a screwed actuating spindle 27 by a cap-nut 19 engaging a flanged ferrule 20 embedded in the valve member. The packing diaphragm 18 of rubber and fabric is clamped peripherally between the main casing and a detachable bonnet 22 and centrally to the valve member by the nut 19. The spindle 27 is held against rotation by a pair of bars 28 clamped to the spindle by bolts 31 and by straddling ribs 33 cast on the bonnet. A nut 23 engaging the thread on the spindle is rotatably mounted in the bonnet and is secured to a manipulating handle 25 by a set screw 26. To secure the valve temporarily in the closed position a detachable cover 38 is removed and a headed bolt screwed in a ferrule 34 embedded in the lower part of the valve member. A set-screw passing through the valve casing above the valve member may be used in place of the headed bolt. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4 a separate detachable fitting is used for temporarily securing the valve member in its closed position. This fitting comprises a post 56 secured to the pipe-line by a split clamp 57 and fitted with four arms 58, 59, 60 adjustably secured to the post by clamps 67, 72, 73. In operation a rod 79 carried by the arm 58 is passed through a hole 71 in the boss of the hand wheel 70 into engagement with the end of the spindle 52. The bonnet is next removed and supported by the arm 59 and finally the edges of the diaphragm are lifted and the forked ends of the arms 60 inserted and adjusted to press on the valve member. The actuating spindle and diaphragm may now be removed. The valve is re-assembled by a reversed series of operations.
