    • 286,929. British Insulated Cables, Ltd., Atherton, W., and Warde, EMay 25, 1927. Machines for making. -To obviate the ruckling of spirally wound paper insulation on shaped conductors which are twisted together to form a circular multi-core electric cable, the shaped conductors are layed up spirally into the positions which they are to assume in the final cable so as to give them a permanent twist. The conductors are then separately wound on drums and. the layers of paper insulation, which take the shaped section of the conductor and also its twist, are applied. The insulated conductors are then twisted up to form a cable in a machine of the sun and planet type. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus for the initial twisting of the conductors which are fed from drums 4 to flier frames 1 and guide rollers mounted in carrier boxes 5 which are longitudinally adjustable. Each conductor is drawn forward by a capstan 7 round which the twisted conductor is passed several times, and from which it passes to a drum (not shown). Rollers 10 centre the conductor on the capstan. The guide rollers comprise two pulleys grooved to provide a contour of the same section as the conductor. After the paper insulation has been applied, the conductors pass to the laying-up machine shown in Fig. 7. Cradles 20 are carried in wheel frames 22 which revolve on roller supports 23 and extend to an eccentric ring frame 25. Links 28, cranked to the frame 25, connect it to a back wheel frame 22. As the frames 22 revolve, the cradles 20 will not revolve about their own axes and will lay the insulated conductors 0 round one another spirally at the revolving head 30 which is carried on the main shaft. The conductors pass through apertures in the head 30 to an assembly die 32, which is carried from the head by rods 37. In laying up the conductors, the parts of the conductors between the drums 4 and the head 30 are kept slack, and the distance between the head 30 and the die 32 may be as long as 18 inches, since theinsulated conductors have previously been given the required set.

    • A computer system includes a look-up table implemented in a memory controller which includes a processor which manipulates data and look-up-table entries so as to make an unused and in-use memory available for testing in a manner which is alien to and aims to minimize impact to the operating system and the main system processor. In-use memory is made available by moving in-use data to an unused area of memory within a bank, by moving in-use data to another bank having an unused area, or by compressing in-use data within a bank and moving the data to an area within the bank made available through such compression, and updating the look-up table to point to the moved areas so that memory references can continue to be serviced during the testing process. Areas made available can be tested by a non-system processor such as a service processor, although other processors can be used.

    • A method and system for booting up multiple PCI peripheral devices, such that the number of bootable PCI peripheral devices is not limited by the amount of computer system memory that is dedicated to storing executable boot code for the peripheral devices. The executable boot code is stored on a Read Only Memory (ROM) on each peripheral device. When a new PCI peripheral device begins to boot up, a check for available memory space in a ROM scan memory address space is performed. If there is not enough available room in the ROM scan memory address space for the new device's executable boot code, then a ROM scan detection logic pages an image of another peripheral device's executable boot code out of the ROM scan memory address space before storing the new device's executable boot code into the ROM scan memory address space.
