    • A system and method for displaying representations of tag sources representative of corresponding component devices includes a tag dictionary for defining the tag sources in a predefined object-oriented format. The tag dictionary is comprised of tag definition objects (152), each containing information relating to a given tag source and each being associated with a tag type object (156). A tag browser (144) allows for display and editing of the tag source representations in accordance with the tag definition objects (152). In a preferred implementation each of the representations includes information relating to a predefined set of parameters characterizing the tag sources. The tag browser (144) also optionally includes a tag filter for causing display of those tag source representations comporting with tag selection criteria, and for suppressing display of all other tag source representations.

    • A method is disclosed in a supervisory process control system environment for installing supervisory process control software from a central software deployment server. The software distribution method includes the step of first specifying a software component for a supervisory process control application to be deployed to a remote location (1810) and a destination for the software component based upon distributed application configuration (1860). A software component is conditionally transmitted to the remote supervisory control computer after the determining step if the software component for the supervisory process control application is not present at the remote location. In accordance with another deployment aspect of the present invention a method for maintaining a communication link to an object (1840) in a supervisory process control and manufacturing information application distributed among a plurality of locations enables a target of client object requests to be moved to a new location within the system without notifying the client objects of the target's new location (1860). The method is carried out within a system including a naming service that is accessed by the application and includes a namespace that a correlates object location independent names corresponding to object location dependent handles.

    • A system and method for establishing associative relationships between properties of a contained object and corresponding parameters of a container application is disclosed herein. The present system contemplates the establishment of both mutual and unilateral associative relationships (152, 154 and 156), with a particular relationship being specified via a user interface (150) created upon instantiation of the contained object. Such associative relationships may be advantageously established without modification of the code comprising the contained object. The present system facilitates implementation of selected functionality of a container application prescribed by an event script. An association (152, 154, 156 and 182) is created between an event arising within a contained object instantiated in a computing environment and a script associated with the container application. An event indication (222) is generated in response to the occurrence of a particular event (220) within the contained object. In response, the event script is invoked and a sequence of script commands corresponding to the selected functionality are executed.

      SOLUTION: In the application, application components (AC) are distributable to a plurality of networked computer devices in a multi-layered hierarchical system wherein lower layers AC host higher layers AC. Application objects (AO) 105 and 107 are placed at a high level of the architecture and model entities within a process control system. Engine objects (EO) host execution of the AO in a run-time environment. Thus, the AO are not deployed until a host EO with which they are associated have been deployed. The EO are hosted by platform objects (PO). The PO correspond to a physical computer system component for executing the EO and the associated AO. A configuration facility presents a variety of views for showing relationships of the objects of the distributed application.
