    • 322,061. Whitehouse & Co., Ltd., W., and Pinnell, C. H. Oct. 27, 1928. Shade holders.-In a gas lamp a bowl or shade is suspended from the gas pipe 5 independently of the lamp by means of a divided collar 1 provided with means whereby it is circumferentially contractible to effectively grip the pipe, and with means, such as one or more radially-projecting hooks 19, to which are attached suspension chains 20 or equivalent members associated with the bowl or shade. The collar 1 is preferably formed as two substantially semicircular blocks 2, 3 provided with pairs of radially projecting lugs 6 - - 9 which may be formed by centrally dividing single lugs. The lugs 7, 9 may be connected togetherdirectly or by means of a pivotally mounted link 10, whilst the lugs 6, 8 may be connected together by a tangentially arranged pivotally mounted adjusting bolt 14 and a milled nut 17. Alternatively, the adjusting bolt could be entirely removable, or the lugs 6, 8 could be undivided, the adjusting bolt passing through one such lug and screwing into the other. A slight space 13 may be left between the blocks 2, 3 to improve the grip of the collar 1 on the pipe 5, and the lugs 8 may be rounded off, as at 18, to facilitate movement of the bolt 14 and nut 17 into their tangential position.

    • 527,132. Plug-cocks. WHITEHOUSE & CO., Ltd., W., and WOOLLEY, W. J. April 4, 1939, No. 10431. [Class 135] A plug-cock has the manipulating head 14 slidably mounted on a non-circular extension of the plug and provided with one or more locking projections or recesses adapted to co-operate with corresponding parts on the cock body. The head is biassed towards the body by a spring 19 housed in a recess in the head and bearing against the head 17 of a screw 18 engaging a screwed socket in the plug extension. An indicating slot may be cut in the head and screw and filled with paint. The periphery of the head may be milled or formed with spaced knobs or wings. In the open position the locking projections engage stop shoulders in the body and the cock body between these shoulders and the lower sides of the locking recesses is inclined so that the head is automatically raised as the cock is moved towards the closed position, ready to snap into the recesses when this position is reached.

    • In a valve or cock having relatively rotatable closure members in sliding engagement, a part at least of the sliding surface of one or both of the members is formed of a synthetic resin material containing graphite or granules of some other solid friction reducing material. The hardness of the synthetic resin material is such that it does not deform appreciably under the contact pressure between the valve members. In the plug cock shown, a sleeve 31 is moulded about a brass plug 20 between flanges 30. The single sleeve may be replaced by a number of axially spaced sleeves or alternatively the complete plug may be of the synthetic resin material. During the moulding of the sleeve 31, the through passage 21 is blocked by a removable core member or alternatively the passage 21 is bored after the moulding operation. The plastics material may be graphite-loaded "Bakelite" (Registered Trade Mark). The tapered bore 12 in the cock body 11 may be provided with a single sleeve such as 31 or a number of axially spaced sleeves of graphite-loaded synthetic resin material. According to the Provisional Specification a thermo-setting plastic which is chemically inert with respect to the gas or other fluid to be controlled may be used.
