[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXX and XXXII] A hydraulic ram wherein an escape valve is adapted to be opened automatically when the ram reaches the end of its outward stroke is arranged so that the excess pressure fluid passes through a passage leading from the front of the piston to an annular space formed behind it, the outlet being at the outer end of the cylinder and controlled by a valve in the piston. A telescopic hydraulic ram for use in tipping bodies of motor vehicles is mounted on trunnions 2, 3 and consists of a central ram 5 and piston 8 in a cylinder 4 having at its lower end a piston 6 movable within an outer cylinder 1 carried by the trunnions. Supply of fluid is by the hollow trunnion 2 and pipe 10 and the exhaust is by way of telescopic tubes 24, 26 with ports 29 leading to the other trunnion 3. The piston 8 of the ram proper carries a ball valve 14 which is disposed beneath a projection 17 on a cross bar 19 and when the piston is at the outward end of its stroke the bar 19 contacts with the end of a sleeve 21 fixed in the cylinder, thereby opening the valve and permitting escape of excess fluid through the passage 22 to an annular space 23 which is under valve control 25 to the inner tube 24. Fluid from 24 passes out at openings in the bottom end into the outer tube 26 and thence away through the ports 29. In order to prevent accumulations of pressure behind the second piston there is also provided a valve 27 controlling a passage 28 leading to the outer tube 26.

    • 590,129. Winches. GYRAL GEARS, Ltd., and CALLA, W. M. April 13, 1945, No. 9281. [Class 78(v)] In a winch of the kind wherein power is transmitted through a slipping clutch and reduction gearing to a winding drum, pressure is applied to the clutch by two springs, one of which is adjusted initially to give a predetermined adhesion value between the clutch faces and the other of which has hand adjusting means for compressing it and the first spring in order to relax the pressure exerted by the first spring on the clutch members. The driving handle 1 is mounted on a sleeve 2 which is formed integral with a clutch member 4 and is rotatably mounted on a hollow shaft 3. The other member 5 of the clutch forms part of a sleeve 6 which surrounds and is keyed to the shaft 3. A pinion 9 on the shaft 3 engages the gear 10 of a composite pinion 10, 11, 12, the gear 12 of which engages a ring 16 of internal teeth fixed within the casing 30. The gear 11 engages a ring of internal teeth 15 secured to the rope drum 14. The sleeve 3 contains springs 17, 19 which are disposed around bolts 18, 20 and abut at their inner ends against the bolt heads 22, 21. These heads bear against a freely movable cylindrical element 23. The outer end of the spring 17 bears against a plug 24 through which passes freely the bolt 18. A nut 25 on the outer end of the bolt 18 bears against a disc 26a mounted in the sleeve 2, and by adjusting this nut the tension of the spring 17 can be varied. The outer end of the spring 19 bears against a collar 26 which is movable within the shaft 3. The collar is moved inwards by a nut 27 on the bolt 20 which is engaged by a tool inserted through the end of the shaft. By this means the pressure on the clutch elements can be relaxed so that slipping will occur at a load less than that corresponding to the initial setting. This setting is restored by screwing a member 28 inwards along the bolt 20 and continuing to turn it after it abuts against the nut 27. Specifications 519,927 and 537,266 are referred to.

    • 585,649. Winches. GYRAL GEARS. Ltd.. and CALLA. W. M. Nov. as. 1944. No. 23710. [Class 78 (v)] A hoisting apparatus comprises a winch enclosed within a casing from which projects a detachable vertical tubular member carrying a pulley at its upper end over which passes the hoisting cable and a pivoted supporting means by which the whole unit may be suspended. Fig. 1 shows a_casing 1 enclosing a winch. A tube 3 is fixed tangentially to the case and-is provided with extensions 4, 5, and 6 the latter supporting a pulley 8 at its end between arms 11. A winch cable 7 with an eyelet 9 is controlled by a handle 16. When the winch is used for hoisting loads into aircraft it is suspended beneath the aircraft by an arm 14 pivoted at 13 to the arms 11 and having a ball connection 15 at its outer end. Fig. 5 shows two such winches hoisting a bomb 20 into a bomb bay of an aircraft. The load in this case swings the winches outward thus balancing the load in the cables 7. In modifications (a) the standard may be deleted and the winch used above the load and (b) the standard may be locked in a horizontal position by a pin engaging the holes 18, 19. Specifications 519,927 and 537,266 are referred to.
