    • 167,033. Ogden, W. J. May 28, 1920. Dampers.-An air-tight casing for enclosing a flue damper when it is withdrawn from its frame arranged within the flue is made in one or more parts of cast iron, sheet metal, concrete, brickwork, &c. The casing i, Fig. 1, may be attached directly to the brickwork enclosing the damper frame a, or, as shown, may be attached to the damper frame by bolts. The damper frame may be provided at the top with a channel formed in one piece or built up of plates and adapted to receive sealing-material into which dips the lower end of the casing. Each section of the casing is provided at its upper edge with a channel j to receive sealing-material such as liquid or plastic cement, sand, asbestos, tallow, or a combination of two or more of these materials in which dips the lower end of the section above, or the lid r enclosing the casing at the top. The sealing-channels may be U-shaped or rectangular in section, and may be in line with the casing, as shown in Fig. 1, or offset as shown in Figs. 9 and 12. The lower edge of each section of the casing may be flanged or provided with a channel to engage with the channel at the top of the section below. Other forms of sealed joints are shown in Figs. 15, 17, 18, and 19. The lid r may be arranged to dip into a deep channel, as shown in Fig. 8, and its position may be adjusted by a set-screw w. A joint is made between the flange x of the channel j and the flange z on top of the casing i by packing y of asbestos. The lid r may be provided with a gland or boss for the passage of the operating chain or rod. A bush may be used to convert a boss having a cross-shape chain hole into one suitable for use with a round rod.
