Class 120(2) In a textile ring spinning machine having anti-ballooning devices of the kind wherein the ends of yarn delivered to the 'spindles are caused, by appliances fitted to the tips of the spindles, to form coils of ,one or more turns about the upper . part of the spindle blades in their paths towards the travellers, apparatus is provided whereby, during the period in which the spindles are decelerating at the conclusion of the spinning operation, the ends of the yarn are drawn upwardly out of the influence of the anti-ballooning appliances on the tips of the spindles, so as to permit ballooning immediately prior to the stoppage of the spindles, thereby clearing previously existing coils of yarn therefrom. As shown, 1 denotes a ring rail. 2 a ring, 3 a traveller, - 4 a spindle blade, 5 a partly built cop on. the spindle, 6 an anti-ballooning device, 7 a lappet and 8 a lappet rail. The latter is pivoted on the machine frame at 11 to permit its being turned upwardly at the conclusion cf spinning for the doffing of the package. The invention is performed by turning the lappet rail 8 through a small angle, as shown in full lines, so that the yarn is drawn away from the device 6 by the lappet eye 10 and thereby permitted to form a balloon 12, this being done automatically in timed relationship with the stopping of the machine. This automatic operation is effected by an electric motor housed in casing 13 driving a shaft 14 bearing a cam 15 with which cooperates a bowl 16 mounted on a lever 17 fixed on a shaft 18 which extends throughout the length of the machine or a section thereof. The shaft 18 also has fixed thereon levers 19 each of which is coupled to a push member 20 which impinges against the depending flange of the lappet rail 8 to raise the lappets carried thereby to permit the yarn to balloon. A handle 21 pivoted at 22 and connected by a link 23 to a lever 24 fixed on shaft 18 is provided to effect movement of the lappets to the doffing position shown in dotted lines. The electric motor in casing 13 is in circuit with the spindle driving motor of the machine so as to be started and stopped at the appropiate times in relation to the spinning operation.

Class 120(iii) In a process for producing a yarn from card sliver by subjecting the sliver to a multi-stage drawing process at each stage of which a number of slivers is combined and drawn out as a single sliver, the degree of draft introduced at the first stage exceeds by a substantial amount that which is necessary to produce a sliver of the same weight per unit length as each input sliver. and at each subsequent drawing stage the draft is progressively increased, the output at the final stage being packaged without real twist and spun into yarn in a single final spinning operation. As described, at each stage the packaged length of input or output sliver may be determined by a measured length coiling or winding means, and slivers feeding one delivery for anystage after the first are coiled in a common can at the preceeding stage; the coiling apparatus described in Specification 684,784 may be used. At the final stage the sliver is consolidated as by means of rubbing or condensing leathers, false twist tubes, or calender rollers, and cross-wound into ball or cheese packages for creeling in a spinning frame.

Class 120(ii) A textile drafting apparatus, including a pair of co-operating drafting rollers 16, 17 and a pair of condenser rollers 18, 19 disposed in relation to the drafting rollers'16, 17 so that the line of the nip of the condenser rollers is at right angles to that of the nip of the drafting rollers, has the bosses of the drafting rollers formed narrower than the spacing between the shafts of the condenser rollers. Condenser' rollers 18, 19 may be mounted between intermediate rollers 14, 15 and front drafting rollers 16, 17 in the closest possible proximity to the nip of the latter. Preferably, the roller 18 has a peripheral groove 181 which receives a tongue 191 on the roller 19 and the rollers 18, 19 are urged together by a leaf spring. Instead of being tongued and grooved, the rollers 18, 19 may be of plain cylindrical form and, whichever form is used, the working faces may be plain, corrugated or coated with cloth or other material: Drive to these rollers may be by frictional contact with the fibres or one or both of the rollers may be driven positively. [Class 120 (ii)] The endless band of a highdraft drawing head employed in spinning and like frames is guided and tensioned by a resilient metal bracket which is clipped on and secured to the nose bar around which the band passes, has a gap for the passage of the band, the edges of the gap restricting lateral movement of the band, and has the free end of the bracket formed with a roll or curl or provided with a pin which presses against the band and tensions it. As shown the bracket 22 has a slideway 22a which clips over the nose bar 19 and is secured thereto by a set screw 23 and the spaced arms 24 depending from the part 23a of the bracket are turned up and provided with a cylindrical pin 25 bearing against the band 21; the band passes between and is guided by the inner edges of the arms 24. The pin 28 has slits in its ends which engage notched parts 24b of the arms 24. The band passes over the part 23a of the bracket and so wear of the nose bar is eliminated. In a modification for use with a nose bar having a flat rear end, the slideway 22a is formed by a part turned down at right angles to the top of the bracket and a part turned up at the edge of a slot through which the band passes, the band being guided laterally by parts struck up at the ends of the slot and being tensioned by a roll or curl formed at the end of the bracket opposite the slideway.

[Class 120 (ii)] Mechanism for lifting the ring-plate or like yarn guiding devices and the lappet plates of ring-spinning and like machines, comprises means in operable connection with the usual lifter bar for imparting a vertical movement to the pokers of the ring-plates through flexible connections and means for simultaneously imparting a proportional vertical movement to the pokers of the lappet-plate ; the parts are returned to the initial positions by gravity and both of the means for imparting vertical movement are independently adjustable to vary the extent of lift without any change of parts. As shown a metal band or tape 34 is adjustably secured at one end to the lifter bar 33 with its other end 37 secured to a pulley 29 on a short shaft 25 mounted in a bracket 23 secured to the spindle rail 11 ; a second pulley 30 on the shaft 25 spaced from and integral with the pulley 29 is connected by another band or tape 40 with pin 41 adjustably fixed in a bracket 44 extending from the poker 13 of the ring rail 12. A lever 54 pivoted on a pin 53 in the bracket 23 carries a bowl 55 engaging a cam 32 fixed to the pulley between them and the free end of the lever carries a bowl 56 engaging a collar 57 on the poker 18 of the lappet plate 17. In a modification the second pulley and cam are dispensed with and the band 34 passes from the lifter bar over a guide pulley to the pin 41, while a block adjustably mounted on the lifter bar carries a grooved roller engaging between the limbs of the longer arm a slotted bell-crank lever pivoted in an extension of a bracket on the spindle rail with the shorter arm carrying a bowl engaging a collar on the lappet plate poker; the longer arm of the lever may be formed of a circular rod bent to an elongated U-shape with a leg adjustably fixed at each side of the pivot of the lever on the shorter arm thereof.

Class 120(ii) An automatic package-winding machine comprises in combination with a friction driving roller 36, a carrier 27 for a bobbin 28, means; e.g. a block 23, at one end of the carrier for mounting it for free rotation with the bobbin in driving contact with the roller 36, said means being capable of traversing away from the roller 36 as the package grows and of returning to the initial position when the package is doffed, as by rollers 24 on the block 23 engaging between vertical rails 22, means for withdrawing the carrier 27 from the bobbin when the package is complete, and charging mechanism for thereafter delivering an empty bobbin to the carrier preparatory to the commencement of the next cycle of operations. When the package is complete, the shaft 35 driving the friction rollers 36 is stopped and a shaft 46 is set in motion, which, through gearing 44, 45 drives a screw 42 to traverse a plate 37 to withdraw the carrier 27 furnished with springs 29 from the package which falls into a suitable receiver. The carrier 27 then drops under gravity to its original vertical position and reversing gear brings the plate 37 and carrier 27 back towards winding position. During this return movement, a gate 53, closing the bottom of a magazine 51, is tripped by a lever 58 carrying a roller 66 to allow the lowermost empty bobbin 52 to fall on to limb 55 of the charging slide 54. The lead screw 56 is now rotated to cause the slide 54 to convey the bobbin 52 thereon and to place it over the carrier 27 in the adjacent winding unit. The sliver extending between the driving roller 36 and the doffed package is then lifted by a lever 60 co-operating with a slot 71 so that it becomes nipped between the empty bobbin 52 which is being donned and the flange 271 of the carrier 27. The lead screw 56 is now reversed and the charging slide 54 is withdrawn into a position to receive the next empty tube 52 from the magazine 51. The shaft 35 is then set in motion to rotate the new bobbin 52, break the sliver extending to the doffed package and begin a new wind. Any suitable timing control means for the operation of shafts 35 and 46 and lead screw 56 may be employed. The delivery point E of the sliver is maintained stationary and traverse along the bobbin is effected by reciprocating the frame 20 to which winding units are attached.

Class 120(iii) Relates to sliver-coiling apparatus of the type in which the coiling operation is effected at least in part by the rotation of delivery mechanism in the coiler head, and which comprises means for transferring the coiler head automatically, after a timed interval sufficient for the filling of one can, to another can placed ready to receive the sliver. According to the invention, means are provided for swivelling the coiler head from one can to another without necessitating interruption of sliver output, such means being in operative relationship with, and adapted to be operated at predetermined time intervals by, means for measuring the length of sliver delivered by the feeding mechanism. As shown, Fig. 3, the coiler head is carried at the top of a column 2, rotatable in a bracket 7, and is driven by a shaft 20 coupled by gearing to the calender rolls 10 (not shown) and 11 of a carding engine. A worm wheel 29 and a counter 54 are also driven from the calender rolls. After delivery of a predetermined length of sliver into a can 52, the counter closes a switch 54a to momentarily energize a solenoid 39 which moves a spring- loaded detent 35 to release a pawl 33. The latter, which is carried on a disc 32, springs into engagement with a ratchet wheel driven by worm wheel 29 so that disc 32 is carried around for one revolution until pawl 33 engages detent 35 again. Disc 32 is integral with a shaft 42, Fig. 5, one revolution of which produces rotation of a gear 45 through 180 degrees and, via a crank pin 47, connecting rod 48 and arm 50, a swivelling through about 90 degrees of a sleeve 5 connected to column 2 so that the coiler head is swung into position over an empty can 53. Rotation of an arm 43 on shaft 42 also moves a slide 60 to oscillate a lever 62 by which the counter is re-set to zero. In a modification, the counter is replaced by a huntercog mechanism constantly driven from the calender rolls; on the impingement of the abutment cogs of the mechanism a ratchet- and-pawl clutch is operated as before to swivel the coiler head. A separate plate 96 between the cans prevents entanglement of the sliver. Specifications 636,352 and 679,027 are referred to.

[Class 80 (iv)] [Also in Group XXV] A cover for the gearing of a spinning or doubling frame comprises two similar doors c, c arranged between a top cover a and a base b formed by the machine headstock. Each door is shaped to form a front and an end or side and has vertical hinge pins d, e supported thereon at its extremities. These hinge pins are adapted to be moved vertically by thumb levers f, g located in a hollow bumper bar h across the centre of each door to engage with or disengage from sockets or equivalent parts on the base and top cover so that the doors can be completely removed, or, by disengaging one hinge pin only, can be swung about the other. As shown, the bottom ends of the hinge pins engage in sockets whilst the top ends are of tubular construction i (see Fig. 7), slotted and gapped, to allow a hinge engagement with fixed ball-headed pins in one position and disengagement therefrom in another position. Locking pins m are provided on the pins to prevent vertical movement of a hinge pin when the door is swung out of the closed position and that pin is acting as a pivot. The ball-headed pins may be provided on the top end of the hinge pins and the tubular sockets fixed on the top cover.
