[Class 126] A gas-fired washing-copper in which the pan 4 of the copper is surrounded by a casing 1, has a mirror 9 riveted or otherwise fixed on the casing so as to reflect upwardly an image of the gas jets 5 from beneath or through an aperture 6 in the casing. The aperture serves for lighting the gas and is surrounded by a frame 7 between the lower straight edge of which and the casing 1 a flange 8 on the stainless steel mirror is grasped. The lower edge of the mirror may be bent down.

[Class 64 (i).] In a washing-copper comprising an outer casing 1 provided with a top plate 2 from which the boiling-pan is suspended, a movable cover 8 forming a table top is mounted above the lid 14. The top plate is surrounded by a flange 5, and at the rear is provided with brackets 6 which are slotted to receive a hinge-rod 11 attached to the cover. The forward end of the cover is supported by a detachable fender 12, and is formed with a depending flange 9 at the front and side edges. The brackets may support a mangle to be located below the cover, as described in Specification 403,578.

Washing-machines with rotary stirrers. - The stirrer 17 is secured to a square-sectioned rod 16 which is slidable in a correspondingly shaped axial aperture in a roller bearing member 13 which rotates on a stationary bearing 8 secured in an aperture in the cover 5 of a washing-boiler. The operating arm 19 of the stirrer is secured to the bearing 13 so that the stirrer shaft may be given a vertical movement independent of the rotary movement of the arm 19 which is limited by co-acting stops on the two bearings. The rod 16 is provided with a cap 17 whereby it may be forced downwardly manually after it has been raised manually or by the pressure of the clothes &c., acting on the stirrer. The bearings are covered by a casing 24.

[Class 138 (ii)] In a washing-machine having a wringer 9 pivotally mounted on the top of the machine casing, and a receiver 17 for water expressed from the clothes having a delivery spout or the like 18 the receiver 17 is so pivotally mounted in the machine as to be automatically movable with the wringer but relatively thereto from an operative position in which it projects sufficiently far beyond the side of the machine casing to deliver the water flowing from it clear of the side of the machine to an inoperative position in which it is withdrawn substantially within the confines of the machine, as the wringer is swung down from its raised operative position to its lowered inoperative position. The wringer is pivoted on trunnions 7 and the receiver 17 may be a trough pivoted on trunnions 13 carried by the side posts 15 of the wringer. The receiver slides from its operative position in which it receives water from a spout 19 of the usual water collecting trough 20, to its inoperative position (shown dotted) across the top of a nut 12 or of a lug cast on the edge of a casting 2.

[Class 64 (i).] In washing-boilers in which the copper pan 2 is surrounded by a casing 23 on which rests an annular cover-plate 1 supporting the copper lid, a ring 3 is interposed between the rim of the pan and the cover-plate so that when they are secured together, the ring is deformed to the shape of the cover-plate to form a seal. One edge of the metal ring is spun over the rim. An upwardly corrugated part 16 on the other edge of the ring is spring-pressed against the cover-plate on assembly of the parts. The cover-plate has a flange 7. A skirt 11 with apertures 14 and a trough 15 for condensation is attached to the lower edge of the pan.

At the same time, liquid passing over the upper edge of the pan is deflected downwards between the casing 1 and a protector plate 16. The rim 3 is also provided with an upstanding rib 5, and the inner part 6 is sloped inwards to return to the copper liquid that has passed the lid 11.
