Switches, quick-action; bases; contacts.-The insulating base A of a switch is recessed to receive the rectilinearly-sliding contact-member C and the fixed contacts B, and the cover AA is also recessed to guide the sliding contactmember and accommodate the fixed contacts so that the component parts of the switch are retained between the base and the cover without the formation of screw-threads in the insulating- material. The fixed contacts are primarily held in place by friction with the walls of the recesses in the base and cover and they are further secured by the expanding action of the binding- screws B co-operating with the screw-threaded plate B and engaging the conductor B . The walls of the recess in the base are inclined as shown and engaged by balls D situated at the ends of bent springs E, Figs. 3 and 5, upon the sliding contact-operating member C so that a quick make-and-break action of the contact shoe C, with which the member C engages, is obtained. The operating-lever F is seated within a cupped recess F' formed in or attached to the top plate G, which serves to secure the base and the cover together. The cupped recess may be screwed upon the cover, in which case the cover and base are held together by the screws which finally fix the switch in its box. The base and cover are square, and fixing holes are provided at each corner so that the switch may be secured any way up in a wall box or the like which is provided with screw-threaded holes at two opposite corners.

摘要： 6658. Strode, W. W., and White, G. H. March 13. Acetylene.-The gas holder J is mounted in an annular tank H', the water in which is maintained at a constant minimum level by a feed-tank E. This tank is connected by a non-return ball valve F and a pipe D with a reservoir A, which is fitted with a ball cock B and an overflow pipe C for maintaining a constant level. A pipe K, above the normal water level in the tanks H , E, and A, communicates by a siphon K , Fig. 3, with the generator L, and the supply of water thereto is effected by displacement due to the descent of the holder J when gas is drawn off from it by the pipe J'. The ratio of the displacement to the descent is increased by the gradual thickening of the walls of the holder, and the supply of sufficient water to meet the demand for gas is thereby secured. The generators, of which there may be two for alternate connection with the holder, are constructed as shown in Fig. 3. They contain a cylinder M in which are piled circular trays M', for supporting the carbide. The trays are formed with gaps which are alternately disposed for the overflow of the water from tray to tray. The pipe N conducts the gas to a purifier 0, Fig. 4, in which water is maintained at a certain level by a supply pipe O and a siphon O , whilst above the water are supported perforated trays O , O , O , containing sawdust, oxide of iron, and powdered charcoal. From the purifier the gas passes by the pipe J to the holder.

As shown applied to two switches U mounted on the same bridge-plate and removable with it by unscrewing it from the box A, the bridge-plate may have lugs B to form supports for the bases of the switches. Several switches may have a common base, and several bridge-plates may be used side by side. The box A may be a skeleton. The outside flush pla e E may be attached to the bridge-plate in any way, e.g., by rings screwed to engage with collars surrounding the switch &c.

摘要： 11,161. Strode, W. W., and White, G. H. May 16. Acetylene.-In a generator, carbide is fed mechanically into water, preferably by water power, the water thus used entering the generator. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, water is supplied to the tank H of a gas holder H , described in Specification No. 6658, A.D. 1897; the gas holder has the upper part of its walls thickened, so that if it descends it displaces water at an increasing rate from the tank H through a tube E to the generator A, where it drives a waterwheel D, the shaft of which carries a feeding- screw in a conical vessel F. Carbide is supplied from a closed hopper G through a valve G to another hopper G , the lower part of which encloses the shaft C and enters the feeder F. In a modification, shown in Fig. 3, the conical feeder F is replaced by brushes L' carried by the shaft C in a casing G below the hopper G'. The feeder may be otherwise driven. The gas produced passes through a washer K to the holder.

Supporting lamps.-An electric coupling which acts also as a support for apparatus, more particularly for use with electric light fittings, consists of a socket A, having a face-plate A secured by screws to the iron box C, its lower wall being inclined at an acute angle a to the face-plate. In the rear end of the socket A is an insulating-block D carrying sockets E to which the leads are connected by binding-screws F. Passages are provided on both sides of the block D to receive the extensions B of the plug. In the socket A fits a plug B, which is attached to, or formed in one with the back of an electric fitting. The plug is inclined to its face-plate B' at an' angle corresponding with the angle a, and has its side walls extended at B to engage the socket as described. An insulating-block G carries pin contacts E' which engage with the sockets E.
