Mantles; mantle carriers.-Upright rag mantles, adapted to be used with Bunsen burners or the like, are provided with temporary reinforcing- members for supporting the mantle, during and after incineration, and prior to shaping and hardening. A tubular fabric 2, which has been impregnated with rare earth salts, is folded longitudinally, as shown at 4 and 5 in Fig. 1. The upper end is secured by stitching 6 without any gathering of the material so that the usual dark spot is obviated. The opposite corners are cut away, as shown in Fig. 3, forming a plurality of openings 8, which ensure uniform distribution of the gaseous mixture. The mantle is secured to a carrier 7 adapted to fit a Bunsen burner 9, provided with an internal gauze, and, on ignition at the upper end, burns downwardly and shrinks. When the gas is turned on and lighted, the mantle is blown to a globular form, as shown in Fig. 6, and hardened.

In one form, the soft mantle 4 is secured to a detachable burner mouth 2, preferably by tying with a cord or string 5, and the preferably .open upper end of the mantle is provided with a draw string 6 to restrict the opening. The upper part of the mantle is preferably made more inflammable than the remainder preferably by coating it with collodion. The mantle is provided during shipment with a temporary internal support, such, as a collapsible tube 8.
