    • An automatic or manual system for operating electric brakes of a vehicle including an actuator (11) actuatable by the vehicle driver between at least first and second actuation phases separated by indication means that define a point of differentiation between the first and second actuation phases. The system operates the electric brakes in a first mode of brake operation when the brake actuator (11) is actuated in the first actuation phase and operates the electric brakes in a second mode of brake operation when the actuator is actuated to the second actuation phase. The second mode of operation applies brakes in a different manner to the first mode of operation. An electric parking brake system including automatic and manual mode of operation is also disclosed.

    • An actuator (24) including first and second members (25 and 31), each of which has a rolling surface (32, 33). Each rolling element (37) being constrained to roll in a spiral path upon relative rotation of the first and second members (25, 31) so as to traverse the gradient of the taperred rolling surface (32, 33) and the other of the rolling surfaces (32, 33) having a profile so that traversal of the tapered rolling surface by the rolling elements (37) causes a shift in the spacing between the first and second members (25, 31). The actuator (24) is suitable for use in a disc brake caliper or a drum brake for actuating the brake friction lining into engagement with the disk rotor or drum brake surface.

The control device is operable to limit the differential between the loading in the cables (21, 22) by movement of the connecting plate (29). The control device further includes a clutch (32) operable to inhibit the movement of the connecting plate (29) until a predetermined difference in loading is reached. In this way the control device (24) enables different return loadings in the respective drive cables (21, 22).
