    • A blender (1) has a frame (2). A number of raw material storage bins (3) are mounted at a top of the frame (2). Suspended on the frame (2) beneath the raw material storage bins (3) is a weigh hopper (4). Mounted beneath the weigh hopper (4) on the frame (2) is a mixing chamber (5) for reception of materials to be blended from the weigh hopper (4). A mixer, in this case provided by a mixing screw (6), is provided at a bottom of the mixing chamber (50) for blending materials within the mixing chamber prior to discharge of blended materials through a material outlet (7) at a bottom of the mixing chamber (5). The material outlet (7) discharges blended material into a material discharge pipe (8) and through an outlet duct (9) having a flanged end (10) for mounting the blender (1) on a processing line such as a plastics extruder. The mixing chamber (5) is mounted on a cantilevered support platform (12) on a base plate (140) of the frame (2) and cooperates with a load cell (15) mounted on the base plate (14) to provide a measurement of the weight of the mixing chamber and materials therein to determine the weight of the materials within the mixing chamber.

    • The invention relates to a material transfer device (1), in particular for use with blenders associated with a material processing device such as a plastics extruding device. The material transfer device (1) can be used for controlling delivery of measured amounts of particulate material to or from a weigh hopper, or for mixing materials in a mixing chamber of the blender. The material transfer device (1) includes a pipe (2) defining a material delivery path. The pipe (2) has a material inlet (4) and a material outlet (5). An air inlet manifold (10) encircling the pipe (2) is connected by an air supply line (14) to a pressurised air supply. Air outlets (12) of the manifold (10) direct an air stream towards the outlet (5) of the pipe (2) to draw material through the pipe (2) from a hopper (6) of particulate material (7), the pipe inlet (4) being located within the hopper (6). An air inlet valve (16) in the air supply line (14) is connected to a controller (22) which is operable to open an shut the valve (16) for pulsing the gas stream to control the amount of material delivered through the pipe (2).

Batches of blend materials are delivered to the mixing chamber (2) from material supply bins (36) via a weigh hopper (30). Within the mixing chamber (2), a mixing screw (3) circulates and mixes the blend materials prior to discharge through an outlet (4) to an extrusion process line. As material is discharged, a material level sensor 5 is uncovered and calls for a further batch of blend materials to be discharged from the weigh hopper (30) into the mixing chamber (2). The screw (3) has a pair of mixing blades (21, 22) of opposed pitch to direct material inwardly from outer ends of the screw (3) towards a centre of the screw (3) located above the outlet (4). Excess material above process demand requirements is delivered to the outlet (4) by the screw (3). This excess material is directed upwardly away from the outlet (4) and recirculated towards outer ends of the screw (3) and remixed with out material within the mixing chamber (2).
