    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved type curved ion guide including an ion guide which can transfer ions by high kinetic energy, and at the same time, can transfer ions having a plurality of masses, and further, can maintain an optimum ion transferring condition. SOLUTION: The ion guide includes a plurality of curved electrodes and an ion deflecting device. The electrodes are arranged in parallel with each other, and each electrode is arranged in parallel with its curved central axis, and further, the curved central axis extends along the circular arc of a circular portion which has a radius of curvature. The plurality of electrodes are radially spaced from the curved central axes, respectively, and further, define an opposed pair of the electrodes define a curved ion guide region disposed between the opposed pair of electrodes, in the peripheries of their curved central axes. The ion deflecting device may have a device for applying a DC electric field to at least two of the plurality of electrodes in a radial direction. Also, the ion deflecting device may have a pair of curved parallel ion deflecting electrodes.       SOLUTION: To prevent the switchable birdcage coil from absorbing energy by coupling to the receiver coil or by absorbing power from the RF field produced by the precessing nuclear spins, one or more of the reactive elements 16 of the birdcage coil are switched from a normal reactive impedance state to a high impedance state. The high impedance state is formed by switchably combining the reactive element 16 with a complementary reactive element 31 thereby performing tuning to resonate a combining circuit at the NMR frequency.

      SOLUTION: RF electric fields produced by electric potential differences in NMR probe coil windings may penetrate the NMR sample and a sample tube while causing sensitivity loss and noise in NMR spectroscopy. Counter-wound spiral coils arranged on both the surfaces of a planar substrate or on two adjacent planar substrates produce electric potentials that minimize the electric field over the sample region, thereby increasing the sensitivity of the NMR probe. Alternatively counter-wound spiral coils arranged adjacent to each other on the outer surface of two concentric cylindrical surfaces that surround the NMR sample minimize the electric field over the sample region. The electric potential of the spiral coils is reduced by adjusting the length of at least one coil.
