    • For the finishing of hardened crown wheels in which a crown wheel (11) to be worked meshes with a cylindrical honing pinion (13) whose geometry corresponds to that of a working pinion which must be able to mesh with the worked crown wheel, either the crown wheel or the honing pinion is driven so that it rotates, while the honing pinion or the crown wheel is in principle freely rotatable. The crown wheel and the honing pinion are moved to and fro relative to each other in the direction of the axis (15) of the honing pinion. The width of the honing pinion is greater than the length of the teeth (12) of the crown wheel, and the honing pinion is mounted so that it rotates on a slide (22) which is movable to and fro along a guide (23) in the axial direction of the honing pinion. The position of the axis of the honing pinion relative to the crown wheel is fixed. The tooth width of the teeth (16) of the honing pinion is such that there is play between the teeth of the honing pinion and the teeth of the crown wheel. The shaft of the honing pinion is braked by means of the braking device (25), so that during a specific direction of rotation of the crown wheel its teeth are worked at only one side. During the working process it is ensured that at least two teeth of the crown wheel are always meshing with the teeth of the honing pinion.

    • A tool for manufacturing crown wheels by means of a machining hobbing process, which consists of a disc (12) which can rotate about its axis and on the circumference of which machining elements are disposed whose cutting edges lie in the surface of a profile which mainly extends over the circumference of the disc as helical ribs. In each cross-sectional plane perpendicular to the screw direction of the ribs, the prodile has the shape of a number of profile teeth (21b-d) situated next to one another. The profile shape is based on the base geometry of a pinion which is characteristic for the crown wheel to be manufactured and has involute toothing (23a-e). The profile has such a shape that a part thereof lies outside the surface of revolution which is formed by rotation of the addendum circle (26) of the characteristic pinion about the rotational axis of the tool. As a result, the tool has machining elements or machining element parts whose cutting edges lie in the surface of said portion of the profile and can serve for performing a premachining operation when manufacturing a crown wheel.

    • Crown wheels (21) are ground on a grinding machine with the aid of a hobbing grinding disc (11) of ceramic material which is formed on the same grinding machine with the aid of a dressing crown wheel (13) with one or more teeth (14) provided with a dressing material such as diamond. The shape of said crown wheel tooth or teeth is in principle the same as the shape of the teeth of the crown wheel to be ground. The hobbing grinding disc (11) is mounted on the grinding wheel shaft (12) of the grinding machine both during its formation and during the grinding of the crown wheels, while the dressing crown wheel (13) or the crown wheel (21) to be ground is mounted on the workpiece holder (15) of the grinding machine. During the formation of the hobbing grinding disc (11) or the grinding of the crown wheels (21) the movements of the hobbing grinding disc relative to the tooth or teeth (14) of the dressing crown wheel (13) provided with a dressing material or the crown wheels (21) to be ground are in principle the same.
