[Also in Divisions C1, C7 and F4] A cold-pressed body 22 of powdery material, e.g. alumina with water and polyvinyl alcohol additive, is located within a powdery pressure transmitting substance 23, e.g. alumina, in a mould A comprising refractory elements 19, 20, 21, wherein it is sintered as upper piston 20 of the mould A is loaded by refractory bodies during passage upon a kiln car through a kiln. In the embodiment,wherein the refractory bodies may comprise bricks 11 which are simultaneously burnt during the hot pressing of the alumina body 22, the moulds A are carried on a refractory sheet 17 of kiln cars 12, wherein they support a stack of, and may also act as supports between, shelves 18 carrying the bricks 11. The kiln cars 12 pass along a tunnel kiln (13), Fig. 1 (not shown), which is heated to a maximum temperature of 1000‹ to 2000‹ C., e.g. 1750‹ C., by a countercurrent flow from a combustion chamber (14) which is located midway along the tunnel (13) and discharges therefrom at a vertical stack 15, the slow cooling obtained on passing through the tunnel (13) minimizing thermal strain and controlling the crystalline grain size of the body 22. The process is stated to be applicable to the sintering of aluminum ceramics, carbon refractory materials, carbides including carbonic silicon, sulfides, nitrides, borides, and metal powders.
