    • 534,184. Making engine mounting rings &c. BRAIME, Ltd., T. F. & J. H., and BRAIME, T. F. Jan. 12, 1940, No. 720. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-A built-up ring of circular, rectangular or other shape, such as an engine mounting ring for aircraft, is made by pressing or otherwise forming two or more sections, locating them on a complementary former, welding the sections at spaced points and then moving the former and ring relatively to each other to allow the completion of the welds.. The ring may be formed of two pressed U-sections 2, which are assembled on a former 12 having recesses 13 co-operating with projections 3 on the sections, which serve to lock the assembled ring against movement and also subsequently provide bosses for the passage of the engine securing bolts. The former is also provided with slots 14 through which the two sections of the ring may be tack welded internally. After tack welding internally and externally the former and ring are then moved apart and the welding completed. Solid or hollow strengthening bosses or bobbins, 7, 4, Figs. 5 and 4, with reduced ends may be placed between the sections at the parts 3 during assembly. They are subsequently welded at 27, 26. The edges of the sections may be chamfered or spaced slightly apart by the bobbins to provide a welding recess. Face plates 28 and collars 29 and brackets may also be welded in position on the ring while it is on the former. The former 12 may be mounted on the centre 15 of a jig table 16 and the ring sections assembled thereon and held together by bolts 17 passing through the bobbins. The ring and former may then be lifted off the jig table and mounted on a rotatable table 18 for the welding operation. Bolts 19 on the table pass through holes in the former and the ring is held by clamps 20 against facing blocks 21 on the table. Wedges 22 temporarily hold the sections evenly apart. After tack welding the former 12 is drawn towards the table 18 by bolts 19 to expose the whole of the inside joint for completion of the weld. The bobbins are then welded and the face plates &c. welded. The face plates 28 are welded through countersunk holes and also round the edge. Small boles 31 are provided to line up with centre markings on the solid bobbins to indicate the correct position.

    • 532,648. Welding. HOLDEN, T. F., and HOLDEN, R. W. Sept. 19, 1939, No. 26106. [Class 83 (iv)] An electrode of a spot or other electric welding machine is operated by an hydraulic ram formed as a unitary construction with the pressure pump and an electric motor for driving the pump. A cylndrical oil tank 1 axially and angularly adjustable by handles 22 in a bracket 18 on the machine frame carries at one end the hydraulic ram cylinder 4 and at the other a rotary pump 2 and an electric motor 3. The pump delivers oil through passages 7, 8 to the ram cylinder when a valve 5 provided with parts 9, 10 is in the position shown in Fig. 3. The passage 7 feeds the oil to a central plug 16 which engages a recess 17 in the ram to avoid packing. The pressure is indicated by a gauge 15 and is adjusted by a control valve 13 bridging the passage 8 and oil tank. When the valve 5, which may be operated by a ram on a continuosuly driven shaft or by a pedal is rotated into the dotted position, the pump delivery and the ram cylinder are both placed in oommunication with the tank the ram 14 being returned by a spring. To the ram may be secured a holder such as a double split clip. The clip may be constructed for holding an electrode in alignment with the ram or for holding it at one side thereof. The work may be supported on interchangeable cantilever brackets mounted on a vertical slide.
