Cleaning machines. - The ends of the travelling flats and the spaces between them are kept clean by a rotary or a reciprocating brush moving in the direction of the axes of the flats. The brush A is carried by a rod D which slides through a bracket E. A bowl V at the end of the rod rests on an a r m H pivotally mounted in a bracket I. A bowl J adjustably mounted in a slot K in a second arm secured to the arm H rests on the back of the chain P carrying the flats. A spring T keeps the bowl J in contact with the chain. By this means, a vertical reciprocating motion is imparted to the brush, which is rotated by worm or bevel gearing from any suitable part of the carding-engine.

Carding-engines.-The fly &c. is removed from the flats of carding-engines by positively rotating brushes with their axes at right angles to the length of the flat, which are traversed along the flat and are cleared by another brush, from the surface of which the fly &c. is taken away through a conduit by suction. The brushes a which engage the flats b, Fig. 3, are carried by a bracket o supported on a tubular casing enclosing a right-and-left-handed threaded screw g. The bracket o carries a fork m adapted to engage the screw. The fly &c. raised by the brushes a which both rotate in the same direction, is removed by a brush c and passes away through the nozzle e and pipe d. The gears for driving the brushes are enclosed in a casing p. A rack q is mounted on the top of the casing and is engaged by a pinion r on a spindle s. A gear t is mounted on this spindle and gears with a wheel u loose on the stud v carrying the brush c. The wheel u gears with wheels w secured to the brushes a. The gear t also drives a pinion on a stud 3 and through a gear 2 a pinion 6 secured to the brush c. The bracket o can be adjusted about the screw shaft g to vary the depth of penetration of the teeth and can be moved to disengage the bushes a from the teeth on the traverse in one direction. A rail 7, Fig. 2, is supported on arms 8 from the bearings carrying the screw shaft g. A pulley 9 is mounted on a stud 10 on a plate 11 supported by the bracket o and engages the rail to support the casing p. Both the stud 10 and the rail 7 are adjustable towards one another. The plate 11 is provided with slots 13 engaging studs 14 on the bracket o and is moved longitudinally and laterally at the ends of the traverses by the engagement of the plate with screws 15, 16.

A catch u is provided to hold the detector in position until the carding-engine is restarted.
