    • A bolt assembly (21) including a movable bolt (34) and a user manipulatable bolt displacement assembly is disclosed. The bolt displacement assembly moves the bolt (34) between a locked and an unlocked position. The bolt displacement assembly includes a user manipulated handle (37), a torque transfer assembly (b 38) and an electromagnet (39). Handle (37) is mounted on an exterior side (36) of the bolt assembly (21) and is freely movable without coupling of the handle (37) to displace the bolt (34). Torque transfer assembly (38) in the form of a rocker arm (63) is mounted for movement in response to movement of the handle (37) and moves to and from a torque transmitting position during at least part of the movement cycle of the handle (37). Additionally, electromagnet (39) is reponsive to user input for energization thereof and is positioned to magnetically hold the torque transfer assembly (38) in the torque's transmitting position upon the simultaneous occurrence of energization of the electromagnet (39 ) and movement of the torque transfer assembly (38) to the torque transmitting position by the handle (37). Handle (37) is further movable by the user while the torque transfer assembly (38) is held in the torque's transmitting position to couple the handle (37) to bolt (34) to move the bolt (34) between the locked position and the unlocked position. Additionally, an optic link (29, 32) coupling dead bolt assembly (21) to an electronic door lock assembly (23) is provided so that input to the door lock assembly (23) automatically energizes the electromagnet (39) in the dead bolt assembly (21) to permit opening of the dead bolt assembly (21).

    • A programmable wall switch for controlling the time for turning on and for turning off an incandescent light includes a rectifying circuit for producing from the AC power line a selected DC voltage. The switch includes a microprocessor powered by this DC voltage for turning on a light at any one of several selected times and for turning off the light at one of an additional corresponding several selected times. A time display is provided for displaying the time as well as for allowing a user to review the programmed status of the switch at any one of several selected times. A signal is generated at each zero crossing of the AC power line which is supplied to the microprocessor. The microprocessor produces output signals which turn on, turn off or dim the light at selected times. The ability of the microprocessor to dim the light further enhances the appearance of human occupancy when the switch is used to simulate occupancy of a vacant building.

    • A lock assembly (21) including a movable bolt (28), a movable handle (23) coupled to move the bolt (28) to an open position and a locking assembly (29) mounted for movement between a locked position securing the bolt (28) against movement and an unlocked position releasing the bolt (28) is disclosed. The locking assembly (29) moves in response to movement of the handle (23) and is normally supported in an unlocked position. Movement of the lock assembly (29) by the handle (23) results in moving to a locked position prior to movement of the bolt (28) to an opened position. An electromagnet (31) responsive to an input signal is provided to hold the locking means (29) in the unlocked position and to prevent movement of the locking means (29) to the locked position upon movement of the handle (23). This holding of the locking assembly (29) in the unlocked position permits opening of the bolt (28). Any movement without energization of the solenoid (37, 38) produces immediate locking of the bolt (28) by locking assembly (29), while movement after energization of the electromagnet (31) holds the locking assembly (29) in an unlocked position.

    • A water purification device includes a housing having a base portion and a generally-cylindrical cup-shaped cap removably secured thereto. An input fluid channel in the base portion communicates with one end of the chamber defined by the cup and an outlet fluid channel communicates with that chamber end. A filter cartridge disposed within the cap has a conduit that extends between its opposite end walls. Filter material surrounds the conduit. An inlet opening in the cartridge is positioned to communicate with the input fluid channel so as to permit water to flow through the filter material. An outlet opening in the cartridge is arranged to communicate from the filter material to the other end of the aforementioned conduit remote from said outlet channel. The conduit other end is positioned to communicate to the outlet channel. A valve is included in an extension of the base portion in order selectively to control the distribution of water as between an outlet passage and the inlet channel. The valve itself has a bore and corresponding stem which are longitudinally tapered, a recess cut longitudinally into the stem for permitting fluid to flow from an inlet port outwardly from one end of the stem, an inset cut laterally into the stem opposite the aforesaid recess, and a resilient sealing member disposed in a groove cut laterally into the stem and surrounding the inset exclusive of the recess.

    • A sensor timer is provided for automatically turning on and off a lamp or alternatively for allowing the lamp to be manually turned on and off using the switch normally associated with the lamp. The sensor timer automatically senses the arrival of nighttime despite seasonal variations in the actual time of nightfall and automatically turns on the lamp a first selected time period after nightfall. The lamp is then automatically turned off a second selected time period after the lamp has been turned on or alternatively is turned on and off randomly during the second selected time period. The sensor timer can also dim the lamp. The sensor timer converts from automatic mode to manual mode in response to the turning on of the lamp through its manual switch thereby to allow the lamp to be controlled directly by the manually operated lamp switch. To convert the sensor timer from manual mode to automatic mode the lamp switch is turned on, off and on in rapid succession. The lamp then comes on for a brief period to inform the user that the sensor timer has been successfully converted to the automatic mode of operation.

    • A filter cartridge, for an internally by-passable water purifier apparatus, is in the form of a tubular shell that has inlet and outlet walls with at least one opening being defined in each.
