    • An image recording and reproducing apparatus can record and reproduce both of a digital signal and an analog signal. Operations of a broadcast receiving apparatus and a recording and reproducing apparatus are integrated and superimposition of information on an analog image is realized during recording and reproduction of a digital signal. The broadcast receiving apparatus and the recording and reproducing apparatus communicate with each other to be able to set and obtain states of the opposite apparatus, so that one of the apparatus notifies information of the other apparatus to a user and causes the user to set the information in a picture having the same form as a picture used to notify a state of one apparatus to the user and to cause the user to set the state. Further, before information is superimposed on an analog image signal, a signal conforming in phase to a reference signal of a digital signal is produced in a servo circuit and a reference signal of an analog image signal is supplied to an analog OSD circuit during superimposition of information. At the same time, a reference signal used in the servo circuit is changed over to the reference signal produced in the servo circuit. Thus, the user's operation is simplified.

    • On the occasion of stopping the tape running at a high speed, a winding radius of the tape supply reel is detected to set the tape deceleration rate (a) on the basis of the detected winding radius of the supply reel. After the tape running speed is decelerated up to the allowable speed VL in the predetermined deceleration rate (a), the tape is stopped by effectuating the brake. Thereby, the tape can be driven at the speed higher than the allowable speed VL without generating any damage, enabling reduction of time required for the fast-forward/rewind operation. This can improve application flexibility by providing a couple of tape running modes at the first high speed V1 which is higher than the allowable speed VL and the second high speed V2 which is lower than the allowable speed VL. In addition, running of the tape can be ceased within the predetermined time t from the input of the stop command signal by specifying the maximum speed Vmax depending on the preset deceleration rate (a) and limiting the tape running speed with the maximum speed Vmax.
